Homework

Homework

In class, at the end of each day, students will watch me type the homework into the Google calendar above. They may also choose to write this information down in a planner if your family chose to go that route. Homework will be minimal, and will include math, reading and special projects. Students may also need to take something home that they were unable to finish in class (this is on an individual basis and will not be recorded on the homework calendar link).

Above is a link of the homework Calendar, which will show you what homework has been assigned each day. This should help clarify any discrepancies at home!

Homework Policy

I believe that homework is necessary for independent practice of important skills that have been learned and for enriching the classroom experience. I also believe that students should be spending their time outside of school with their families, friends and enjoying extracurricular activities and sports. Therefore, homework will not be extensive this year. Each night students will bring home their agenda and homework folder.

All assignments will be written into the Google calendar daily, though there will be nights with no HW assigned. Some students will need to take assignments home that they were given time in class to do, but may not have finished completely. Students will also have frequent math sheets to practice skills learned in class independently. I will typically assign only the odd or even numbers on these sheets.

Reading logs will NOT be assigned this year. I will be assigning nightly independent reading (20-30 min.). I am leaving this in parents’ hands to hold your child accountable. Independent reading does have an impact on comprehension, vocabulary and fluency development.

Homework should take at the most 20-45 minutes hour per night for any student. If the homework takes longer than this, please contact the teacher.

Homework Calendar: This year, I have attached a Google sheet link to our website. If you are in doubt about what homework has been assigned, please use this calendar to find the information quickly. A calendar will appear with HW assignments that have been assigned for every month of the school year. YEAH!

Homework Grading Policy:

Homework does not receive an actual grade for report cards. Instead, homework is given credit for being turned in and completed with accuracy. Homework is meant to be independent practice that will support learning in class and achieve mastery of skills. Homework will be given the following marks:

Neat (legible handwriting and not messy marks or paper crumpled or folded)Students should ensure that submitted homework is:

  • Complete (in accordance with teacher instructions)

  • On Time (turned in by the due date given)

Late Work:

I completely understand that life happens and sometimes students need a few extra days to complete an assignment but overall as 4th graders they need to make time each night for homework and make it a priority.

I do not assign homework on weekends so that if a student has missing work because they got behind due to an absence then they can use that time to complete it. PLEASE NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to ask for and complete any missing work, including work missed due to an excused absence.

Homework Overview:

Every week you should expect each student to have the following homework:

  • Math: Math Expressions practice sheets (3-4 weekly depending on content). Study math facts as needed (multiplication and division)

  • Reading at Home: 20-30 minutes of independent reading per night

  • Science/Social Studies: Project-based homework when assigned

Going on Vacation?!: I will support any special trips your family chooses to take in the school year, as these trips also contribute to your child's development and understanding of the world around them. I do need to preface that I do not provide class work in advance, prior to your trip. This is also a school policy. Your child needs to know that they will have work to make-up when they return. If there is a project due or large assignment that the student already knows about, you are more then welcome to work on this during the trip! Thank you for your support with this!

Becoming Responsible:

You can really help your child become more independent by allowing them to be more responsible for their work and assignments. I recognize the efforts of my students and understand that it is tough but highly rewarding feeling when they are able to accomplish goals themselves.
