8th Grade Projects
Technical Drawing and Drafting: On Shape
The imagine and plan phases of the Engineer Design Process provide engineers opportunities to approach problems and think through them before true immersion into the problem. Students have experiences in 3D design using Tinkercad for past projects (see Sixth Grade Projects); On Shape is a next step in sophisticated computer assisted drafting using parametric design concepts. Students create, modify, and manipulate 3-dimensional geometry to compose new parts, modify existing ones, or generate construction tools for later use.
Electrical Engineering and Fashion Design:
LED Superhero Masks
The application of electrical design and the understanding of how simple circuitry works lays a foundation for building sophisticated electronics and robotics. Students integrate fashion design with their electrical design to create superhero masks lit with small LED nodes. It is their chance to express themselves articstically, which is a little different opportunity than several of our other projects.
All Disciplines: Inquiry in Engineering
After three years in the engineering program, students are prepared to identify a problem that is important to them, and use the Engineering Design Process to work through and compose a solution.
Mechanical Engineering: Rube Goldberg Machines
The Rube Goldberg Machine projects are demonstrations of the students' understanding of mechanical engineering principles. In the process of planning, creating, testing, evaluating and refining their machines, students are demonstrating the transfer of energy, with the knowledge of Newton's Three Laws of Motion, while utilizing a number of the Six Simple Machines. Analysis and evaluation are critical thought processes to accomplishing a complete linear flow of energy.
