6th Grade Projects
Technical Drafting and 3D Digital Design
Students investigate technical drafting and drawing using a variety of methods and media. In their explorations, they expand their spatial awareness and reasoning by utilizing precise mathematical measurements and scale. Students craft orthographic and isometric drawings of objects they construct and analyze. To elaborate, they explore 3D digital design techniques using the Engineer Design Process and Tinkercad to redesign classroom furniture to be more inclusive and accessible for diverse student populations.
Aerospace Engineering: CO2 Cars
Students research and analyze the forces of aerodynamics to imagine, plan, create prototypes, test, improve, and finally build a balsa wood CO2 powered car. To have their cars perform optimally, they must evaluate the forces of lift, drag, thrust, and balance when designing their cars and on their prototypes and final builds. In order to accomplish their construction goals, they use hand tools, saws, rasps, sanding paper, etc, to craft their cars.
Structural Engineering: Bridges
Infrastructure issues will be highly prioritized as long as we continue to build and move on our planet. In the Structural Engineering unit, students research the concepts necessary to analyze these issues. They have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of a number of styles of trusses knowing they exhibit different properties of tension and compression.Â
