FIRST Robotics Competition
FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) is a non-profit organization based in Manchester New Hampshire that organizes robotics competitions each year for school age children. Competition is in there name because one of the original ideas was to recreate the excitement of a sporting event. FIRST is like a 'sport of the mind', but in this sport every single play has the chance to "go pro". There is a professional job waiting for every students, if they continue to work to make that dream come true. Making robots is just the means by which we are creating the next generation of engineers and technicians. Learn more about FIRST at their website. firstinspires.org
Originally, regional competitions were the only competition for FRC team. Every team can register to attend one or more regional competition each year. There are around 56 regional competitions each year, scattered across the US and other nations (Canada, Mexica, Turkey, Brazil, China, Australia). These events typical include 60 teams. For many teams, this will be the only event they attend each year. There are now two regionals in Colorado (Denver and Pike's Peak).
The FIRST Championship Event was created to bring the winners of regional events together. It has grown to a huge event in convention center in Huston Texas. The event includes FLL, FTC, and FRC teams and runs four days. They setup and run eight full FRC fields at once, each named after a famous scientist. Each field runs qualification rounds for 75 team. The winning alliances from each field advances to compete on the Einstein Field to determine the world champions.
District competitions were created to states or regions that have very high number of teams. District event are less expensive than regionals making FRC accessible to many more teams and students. Teams will be assigned to a district competition and the winners will advance to the local district championship. There are about 12 districts scattered across the US and other nations (Canada, Israel). These events include 35 - 50 teams. Most of the teams in the district will not compete at the regional or championship level. There are no district events in Colorado.
There are dozens of off-season event between May and December. These will use the same field, runs, and robots from the previous season. They provide an inexpensive way for team to get me value out of the robot they build and provide more experience to team members. In Colorado there is an annual Kendrick Castillo Memorial Tournament in the fall at Regus Uninversity.
