The Choirs
2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR
7/8 Choir (Beginner) - Grade Level 7-8
This beginner-level course is an introduction to the AIHS choral program for all interested 7th and 8th graders. Students will explore individual and ensemble singing techniques, music reading skills, a variety of musical styles, and the art of performing. If students enjoy and succeed in their first semester, they are invited to join the Advanced Choir for the subsequent semester. An interest in music/singing preferred.
*2 evening concerts per semester
7/8 Choir (Advanced) - Grade Level 7-8
This course builds on students’ previous experience in singing and choir performance at Alameda or other school/community groups. This more advanced vocal ensemble will move at faster pace than the beginner semester choir and will further develop students’ musicianship, music literacy skills, and increase performance demands. This is a great fit for any student who has taken at least one semester of choir at Alameda, or has choir experience from another school or community organization. Previous experience in choir/singing preferred.
*4 evening concerts per year (2 each semester)
Lyrics (Treble Choir) - Grade Level 9-12
High school vocal ensemble available to female students or those with treble vocal ranges. While teacher approval is recommended for this non-auditioned choir, both beginners and experienced singers are welcomed. Students in this choir will gain a solid foundation of vocal and choral singing technique, music reading skills, and they will be exposed to a wide variety of choral literature. Students with singing experience transferring from other schools would be welcomed to this ensemble without an audition.
*4 evening concerts and one field trip performance per year
Men's Choir (Tenor/Bass) - Grade Level 9-12
High school vocal ensemble available to male students or those with tenor/bass vocal ranges. While teacher approval is recommended, both beginners and experienced singers are welcomed to this non-auditioned choir: all students will gain a solid foundation of vocal and choral singing technique. Additional areas of focus include community, showmanship and expression, and exposure to an eclectic assortment of music.
*4 evening concerts and 1-2 off-site performances. Annual tour of area elementary schools tentatively planned
Madrigals (Select Chamber Choir) - Grade Level 9-12
An audition-based advanced choir of mixed voices for high school students. This is the premiere vocal ensemble at Alameda and is mostly composed of 11-12 graders, but qualified underclassmen may be accepted upon a successful audition (auditions take place annually before Spring Break). The Madrigals take their musical and vocal abilities to the next level, singing more difficult choral literature, demonstrating independence and initiative in the music-learning process, and performing at a higher level of mastery in performance. Students must have prior choir/singing experience and complete an audition in order to be eligible for this class.
4 evening concerts and 2-4 off-site performances per year; "Mads" also performs the annual Val-o-gram fundraiser in February
