I'm Ms. Refuerzo, and I'm excited to embark on another year of teaching and learning at Ralston! Originally from California, I now call Golden home, where I live with my husband and our two kids, Hayes and Rose. I graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2010 and earned my teaching credential from Fresno State in 2012.
This school year marks my 14th year of teaching and my eighth year at Ralston. I love creating a fun, engaging, and supportive classroom where every student can thrive. My goal is to understand each of my students to meet their academic and emotional needs. Together, we will build a strong classroom community focused on kindness, empathy, and reaching our full potential.
I can't wait for a fantastic year of learning and fun in first grade!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, updates, or for any other reason! We are your student's team!

Attendance: The school day begins at 7:50am and ends at 2:35pm. On time arrival allows our class to make the best use of every moment of the school day. School policy requires all students who arrive after 7:50am to get a tardy slip from the front office. Please notify both myself and the office of upcoming absences.
Birthdays: We love to make students feel special on their birthdays! Students can choose a special birthday recess or Go Noodle video.
Parties: We will have class and holiday parties throughout the school year. You will be notified through the weekly newsletter and school messenger. Families are welcome to bring food in for the parties; however, they must adhere to the District Wellness Policy. A short list of acceptable foods are fruits, veggies, crackers, cheese, and popcorn. Please see the district website for more details.
Nut-Free Classroom: Due to students’ severe nut allergies, we are a nut-free classroom. Please do not send nuts to school for lunch or party treats.
Classroom Seating: Students have assigned table seats. However, students may choose to work at a focus spot during independent work time. The purpose of the focus spots is to allow students to sit or stand at a location that feels comfortable for them. The teacher may move students at any time if the focus spots become detrimental to student learning or safety.
Restroom: Students may use the restroom during independent work time, transitions, lunch, and recess. Only one student may be out of the room at a time. Students must get permission to use the restroom. If the teacher is working with a small group, the student may walk over, hold up the sign, and wait for a silent thumbs up from the teacher to go. Students must place the bathroom pass on his or her desk. Students must walk straight to the restroom, use the restroom, wash their hands, and walk straight back to class.
Water: Students may have closed top water bottles at their seats. If the bottle becomes a distraction, students must keep their water bottles by the water fountain. Students may get water during independent work time and transitions.
Snack: Healthy please! Please send one for the morning snack and one for the afternoon snack. Please consider if the snack provided can be independently opened and consumed (i.e. please don't send an orange that your student will need help peeling). If the snack requires a fork or spoon, please send one. Please also consider the cleanliness of the snack. Something like a fruit cup in syrup tends to spill and create a sticky mess. The simpler the better!
Very Important Monster: Each week we have a new VIM. This student is randomly drawn. He or she is the class helper for the week. On Friday, the class interviews and writes about the VIM. The VIM may also bring in a show and tell item to share with the class.
Room 16 learners are independent, responsible, and respectful!! We encourage students to take responsibility for all their choices. We empower students to be problem solvers and kindness ambassadors. We have the following systems in place to ensure that all students have a safe and happy learning environment!
Classroom Rules: We have 5 classroom rules. These rules are developed in order to make sure students are safe and able to learn.
Follow directions quickly
Raise your hand to speak
Raise your hand for help
Make smart choices
Be kind
Voice Level Rules:
We have 5 classroom voice levels. Each part of the day has a designated voice level. The voice levels are meant to build self regulation skills and to ensure a productive learning environment.
Voice Level 0- no voices
Voice Level 1- whisper voices
Voice Level 2- low voices/partner voices
Voice Level 3- presentation voices
Voice Level 4- recess voices
Class Chime: When the teacher hits the chime, students will give the teacher “hands and eyes”, or eyes on the teacher and hands together.
Whole Class Systems
Smilies vs. Frownies: Students work together to earn Smiley. When the whole class is caught following 1 or more of the class rules, the teacher will reward a Smiley! When the majority of the class is not following 1 or more of the class rules, they earn a Frowny. The whole system is light hearted and meant to encourage good choices and give gentle reminders when needed. At the end of the day, we compare the Smiley and Frowny tally marks. If the class earns more Smilies than Frownies, they earn a Popcorn Point! 30 Popcorn Points = a Popcorn and Movie Party!
Individual Systems
Class DOJO: Class DOJO is an online, interactive classroom tool. Through Class DOJO,
I can reward students points for making good choices, I can communicate with parents, and post student work and videos! Students can earn DOJO points for following the 5 classroom rules. When students earn 50 points, they receive a certificate, a shout out on Class Dojo, and whole class recognition. Connect to Class Dojo here: https://www.classdojo.com/ul/p/addKid?target=class&class=CHY9YUD
Consequences: If a student is struggling to follow classroom rules, routines, and procedures, the following will occur:
1st/2nd time- redirection/reminder of rules
3rd time- in-class break (student makes the choice when to rejoin the class)
4th time- in-class break w/ teacher-student behavior reflection and remediation
*Behavior that puts student safety at risk will be directed to the office
I believe in restorative practices. It is important that students not only understand what we do or do not do something, but also why. Rather than punish, I focus on helping the student remediate the situation and learn from it.
Please do not feel any pressure to purchase anything on the wish list. I just have this here for if/when parents are interested.

Looking for some extra help for your kiddo? Please email me and I can get you in contact with a great tutor!
On the Friday of your student's VIM week, he or she may bring in a show and tell item from home. Please have your student practice presenting the item. Here are some things to think about:
What is the item?
Where did it come from?
Why is it important to you?
What 2-3 things do you want to share about the item?
Practice presenting while standing up and projecting your voice.
Be prepared to answer 3 questions about your item from your classmates.
