Last Week at a Glance
Last Week at a Glance
Reading: students worked on important reading strategies like asking "who," "what," "where," and "when" questions before they read and while they were reading. Then, they were amazing at finding those answers hidden in the text. We also had fun identifying all the different characters in our stories.
Please see Heart Words week 3 in the section below for words covered in class this week. Once we have covered a word, students should know how to read and write it correctly. You can help them practice this at home.
Homework- Students must read for at least 20 minutes every day.
Writing: Students published our class story by writing it in their best handwriting and drawing a detailed illustration.
Math: Students participated in multiple surveys throughout the week. They learned how to represent the data with symbols, tally marks and numbers. They also learned how to analyze data by answering questions about the representations.
Vocabulary- sum, difference, category, survey, data
Spelling: Students learned how to read and write words with open and closed syllables. Rule- if a single syllable has one vowel, and the vowel is followed by a consonant than the vowel will make a short sound (closed syllable). If there is not a consonant after the vowel than it makes a long vowel sound (open syllable)
Please see Spelling Words Week 4 in the section below for the spelling words we will cover next week.
Science/Social Studies: We started our Community Helpers Social Studies unit. This week we focused on Veterinarian!
Each week, your child will focus on learning 'Heart Words.' These are words that must be memorized because they can't be easily sounded out. You can help your child succeed by pointing out these words in the books you read together and encouraging them to spell these words correctly when they write.
