Course Description
In this class, we will analyze media in order to develop an understanding of how the content influences individuals and society. We will devote time to each of the following:
Ø News (fake news)
Ø Television
Ø Movies
Ø The internet
Ø Advertising
Ø Pop culture
Ø Social media
We will explore how media messages are made, distributed and perceived. We will also examine the power of persuasion, bias, misinformation and stereotypes.
Additionally, we will develop and refine skills for college and career readiness. We will devote some time to preparing a personal essay for college and practicing public speaking skills. We will also do a careers unit in which you will create resumes, cover letters and practice interview skills.
Classroom expectations
Ø Come prepared for class- Students should bring pens, binder, homework, and assigned reading.
Ø Respect yourself and others.
Ø Do your best to have a positive attitude. Your attitude plays an important role in setting the tone of the class.
Ø Listen and respect others.
Ø If you don’t understand something ASK! - Questions are a sign of intelligence.
Ø Take risks and challenge yourself.

Ø 3 ring binder that is a minimum of 2" deep
Ø Dividers- recommended to maintain an organized binder
Ø Loose -leaf paper
Ø Pens - dark blue or black ink
Ø Highlighters
Grading Policy:
Projects/Writing 40%
Tests 30%
Quizzes 20%
Homework 10%
Homework
Ø Students are responsible for keeping track of due dates and assignments.
Ø There is no excuse for not completing an assignment.
Ø If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, it is due the day you return. If you miss my class but are in school you are still responsible for turning in the assignment.
Ø If you are having trouble with an assignment you must ask for help BEFORE it is due.
Ø Homework will be accepted late up to one week with a penalty of 75%; thereafter it is 50%.
Reading Expectations
Ø Students must be active readers. It is essential that students annotate texts.
Ø Some of the reading for this class will be done outside of class. We will use class time for short lessons, discussions, learning activities etc.
Ø This year we will predominately be reading articles and informational texts related to various forms of media.
Be responsible and respectful This means:
Ø Have your homework done, or own up to not having it done.
Ø When discussions breaks out, please be courteous of other students’ ideas and opinions. Everyone is equal and has a right to their own opinion. You might actually learn something by listening to someone else’s point of view! Respect that!
Ø Respect yourself, teachers, substitutes, books, belongings, students, friends, acquaintances and opinions.
