For my final project I established a distribution system of education in Syracuse to help citizens of Syracuse learn about the massive lead epidemic that is plaguing the city. This distribution system also taught them strategies they can perform to reduce their risk of lead poisoning, and provided them easy access to resources so that they could find what they need to keep themselves and their family safe. I am working with the Onondaga Health Department, Lead Grant Program, and Central New York Community Foundation to develop a free encapsulation service for all citizens of Syracuse so that no child in Syracuse is poisoned by this insidious epidemic. This program would supposedly work wherein homeowners could apply for aid and, if they were approved, contractors would help encapsulate their home free of charge, protecting that homeowner from lead. This would provide protection from lead that individuals might otherwise be unable to afford, reducing the impact that lead has on some of its largest victim populations, the urban poor and African Americans that have been restricted to subpar housing due to decades of redlining and other discriminatory practices. This program is still in development so if you would like to help combat this serious issue and aid our program please reach out at EncapsulatingSyracuse@gmail.com or at (315) 418-6631. If we can work together I am sure we can protect every citizen in Syracuse from this life altering poison.
