Adams, M., Moreno, C., Polk, M., & Buck, L. (2003). The Dilemma of Interactive Art Museum Spaces. Art Education, 56(5), 42–52. http://www.jstor.org/stable/3194042
This article discusses the increase in interactive art pieces in museums as well as the problems that come with them. It uses three examples of interactive art pieces, identifying their flaws and successes. Successes include deeper connections and creativity for the audience, visitors found it meaningful, and engagement in other parts of the museum. Flaws included the shifting from different teaching styles, causing problems with art you can’t touch, and possibly not being able to use the technology. The source is useful to me because it has a lot of information and examples of the interactive pieces I am looking for. I believe it is reliable because it is a journal article with more than one author and seven references from different books, institutions, and universities. The goal is to provide reflection on museums’ attempts to install interactive art to improve the installations in the future. This article made me think more deeply about interactive art. It helped me realize that I needed to look at the failures and successes of prior examples to see what would be best for me. I don’t know how much it will affect my final project but as of now I think it was helpful to read and gave me more information on my topic.
Lee, H. (2015). Interactive Design and Community Participation: The Case of Mullae Art Village. International Journal of Arts Management, 18(1), 5–13. http://www.jstor.org/stable/24587083
This article focuses on the significance of community involvement, interactive art, and global aspirations within the art community of the Mullae Village in Seoul, South Korea. It discusses the village’s evolution from a monotonous, inconspicable village to a lively hub for artists and performers. The article emphasizes the importance of user-centric design and shows examples within the village of Mullae. This journal article is very helpful because it is extremely relevant to my research question of community connectedness through art. It contains 21 references, all of which appear to be professional and reliable. The author is a professor at a university and has a PhD in design. This article gave me real life examples of a large scale version of what I want to accomplish. I learned about the regenerative power that arts can have on an area, and the benefit of art exhibitions. The arts community in Mullae also focuses on community satisfaction and engagement, and that diversity is their major strength.
Interview with Ian Forster, a producer at Art 21
The process that he and his team goes through when planning the interviews. The most important parts being the studio visit, the emphasis on a narrative, and making the audience care about the artist. The point of the videos he makes is to get the audience interested in the artist and to tell a story about the artist's life. I had a 30 minute zoom interview with Ian and he answered all of my questions during our discussion. This source has been the most useful source I’ve had so far, because all of the advice is achievable and crucial to the making of documentaries. It helped me put everything into context of a real production team making videos, and want to try to accomplish a similar product on my own. He gave pretty specific advice that will help me with the details of my project. This source was very helpful and gave me confidence that I would be able to achieve my goals of this project. Ian was also very optimistic which gave me hope as well. He also seemed very open to more questions later if I come up with more and he’ll be happy to talk with me. I also might go to New York City some weekend to do a site visit.
Art 21 Video - Azikiwe Mohammed is a Guy Who Makes Stuff
https://art21.org/artist/azikiwe-mohammed/
This video is about an artist named Azikiwe Mohammed and how he creates his artworks. The video goes through the life and story of Mohammed and shows off his unique and eye-catching art to the audience. Mohammed explains the feelings he wants to convey through his art and how he wants to inspire others and do things for the greater good. This video is made by Art 21, a non-profit art organization that makes short videos documenting the lives of different artists in New York City. I know this is a reliable source because of my discussion with Ian Forster and the realness of their production. I loved watching this video. It really inspires me to think outside the box when it comes to finding different artists in Syracuse. I found an artist that reminded me of Mohammed and immediately started talking with him and was able to get his business card and will contact him to interview. Seeing and hearing different perspectives on art made me realize that I need to expand my knowledge on different art forms as much as possible and encourage others to do that as well.
