Hello! My name is Nicole Chen and I'm a junior at J-DHS. For my topic this year, I wanted to focus on the impact of education on career development and specifically on what that looks like for people living in lower income areas. STEM education means a lot to me as I've been incredibly fortunate to have had fantastic science teachers in the past. My research question, for the main part, was:
How can fostering an interest in STEM lead to the pursuit of a higher education and how can that help students create a better environment for themselves?
I met with Galyn Murphy-Stanley, the Outreach and Food Coordinator at the United Methodist Church;Â Maxine Burgin, the old director at the Vineyard Community Center; and Richard Richardson III, the Director of Restorative Discipline for the SCSD, to talk about the problems they saw in the community. I also interviewed various teachers and students within the J-D community to see what they felt.
