In the DSM-5, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is defined as a neurodevelopmental condition defined by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. It combines previously separate diagnoses like Asperger's and pervasive developmental disorder into a single spectrum. (https://www.apa.org/topics/autism-spectrum-disorder)
In Jarrell ISD, students who are identified as an individual on the Autism Spectrum are served in a variety of instructional settings. The needs of the student will determine where they are the best served.

In 2026, Jarrell ISD was awarded an Autism Innovation Grant through the Texas Education Agency and Region 13. This two-year professional development initiative is designed to increase Jarrell ISD’s capacity to effectively serve autistic students across settings and grade levels.
Learning activities will build educator knowledge of autism, evidence-based practices, and collaborative systems that promote meaningful inclusion and improved outcomes for students and families. Content, pacing, and examples will be customized for Jarrell ISD campuses, existing programs, and identified priorities under the Autism Innovation Grant.
Learning materials will include customized course texts, planning templates, data-collection tools, and case-based activities developed by the presenter, with scenarios contextualized to Jarrell ISD. Participants actively engage through problem solving, reflection, action-planning, and implementation between sessions.
