Talk by historian Beverly C. Tyler
Wednesday October 15, 12 noon to 1PM
JSFC partnered with the Fairfield Museum and History Center to present Mr. Tyler speaking about his book, ‘Mary Swift Jones: Love and Letters from Japan’. This presentation was part of the museum's program series, "History Bites", which are held several times a year and include a talk and light refreshments.
Fairfield has a long seafaring history. This special talk dove into the story of Mary Swift Jones, wife of Capt. Benjamin Jones of East Setauket in Long Island. Beverly Tyler, historian for the Three Village Historical Society, followed Mary Swift Jones as she sailed from South Street Seaport with her husband to embark on a voyage to China and Japan in 1858. Through Jones’ letters, artifacts, the first mate’s journal, and a cabin boy’s book, we experienced her adventures over three years. Mr. Tyler also explained how he came to learn and write about her. She was his great aunt.
Mr. Tyler brought copies of his book to sell and sign. The event was well-attended.
