Standards Addressed At This Station
Science (NGSS)
2-PS1-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify materials by observable properties.
Crosscutting Concepts: Patterns; Cause and Effect; Structure and Function
Science Practices: Observing, testing, and communicating findings
English Language Arts (CCSS-ELA)
RI.K–5.3: Explain connections between scientific ideas and observations (e.g., capillary action).
SL.K–5.2: Recount key details from a scientific video and explain what was learned.
W.3–5.7: Conduct short hands-on investigations and report results.
Technology (ISTE Standards for Students)
1.1 Empowered Learner: Use videos and demonstrations to build understanding.
1.3 Knowledge Constructor: Investigate scientific processes using digital tools and real-world testing.
1.6 Creative Communicator: Share findings or artwork created by capillary action.
Art (National Core Arts Standards)
Anchor Standard #1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas using color and pattern.
Anchor Standard #2: Organize and develop artistic work using selected tools (markers, paper towel).
Anchor Standard #10: Synthesize and relate knowledge of science and art (capillary action creating visual effects).
Students should watch the video about capillary action
Have students color their paper towel with washable makers
Make shure they keep the colors lower so they can see the colors climb
Have them dunk the ends of their paper towels into the water cups and let the capillary action get to work.
I have them do this activity first, and then put a nametag by their creation, so they will come back at the end to see it climb and create their artwork.
