What is Community Service?

While young adults express the most interest in community engagement in a half-century, high school and college students are less likely to volunteer or donate to charity today than they were 15 years ago.

Costs of ignoring the problem

Benefits driving positive change

A world without volunteers would be a world without 140 million people, an economy without 400 billion dollars

Increase self-esteem and gain more empathy

Diminished life skills and social dexterity among youth

Build long-term generosity

Lack of generosity and sense of community

Create bonding within the community across different ages

Marley Dias

American Activist

At 11 years old, Marley Dias was frustrated that most children’s books didn’t represent the cultural diversity of herself or her peers.

That’s why she decided to launch the #1000BlackGirlBooks Twitter campaign to collect and donate books that would help black girls feel seen. The goal was to collect 1,000 books featuring Black female protagonists by February 2016.

Case Study

The Youth Council launched its gardens project in 2013. Based on its success, they decided to continue funding the gardens.

Last year, teenagers harvested more than 200 pounds of vegetables. They sold the produce to local residents and donated to CI's nutrition program.

Youth continue to invest in the gardens, ensuring their longevity.
