During 2024, we focused our efforts on erosion control, programming, and installing our outdoor classroom, all through the generous support of the George E Archer Foundation.
In April, we celebrated earth day with a public program that included information stations on tree planting, compost, and invasive plants. Participants could help plant trees, learn techniques for removing invasive species through hands-on practice, as well as plant seeds to take home. There were also story times, playing in the garden, and crafts for our youngest visitors. The Waste Reduction District of Monroe County and the Department of Natural Resources Entomology and Plant Pathology hosts informational tables at this event as well.
Sadly, spring storms brought more erosion issues to the garden. We added another path that hides a drainage swale to help prevent future issues.
During the summer, the Boys and Girls club teen camp took two field trips to the Outdoor Learning Lab in the summer of 2024. They learned about dichotomous keys (how to use them and how to make them) as well as studied the pigments used in photosynthesis. The visitors split their time between the Outdoor Learning Lab and our biology labs. One of the highlights for the club members was interacting with the Biology program's Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches!
In the spring of 2024, the first graders from Grandview Elementary school visited the Outdoor Learning Lab for our annual programming focused on seeds and plants. In the fall of 2024, the next group of first graders visited for programming focused on animals. Unfortunately, the weather for the fall visit did not cooperate (brrr) so we met inside. The Education dual credit students from Hoosier Hills Career Center partnered with us to gain more experience, doing all the prep work in advance for our crafts and leading some of the programming during the visit!
In the fall, we built our Outdoor Classroom. The classroom, nestled in the woods, is the perfect spot for our Ivy Tech courses as well as public programs.
In October, we held a Halloween in the Garden event that featured fall crafts, a fun photo booth, cookie decorating, planting "zombie plant" seeds, story telling, and a spooky scavenger hunt in the woods. Families could pre-order lunches made by (and raising funds for) Ivy Tech's culinary program who also hosted the cookie decorating table.
It takes a lot of work to keep the Outdoor Learning Lab running. A huge thank you to all our 2024 volunteers!
