This is a depiction of the English legend of King Arthur and the Excalibur, and the myth of Merlin the magician and Kilgharrah, the great dragon.
King Arthur, in full armour and a crown on is head, is poised to pull the sword out of the stone to claim his rightful place as the king of Britain. The position of his hands and his stance suggest a strenuous tension. The dragon is stood partially on the ground, rearing up before flight, having finally been freed from captivity. His front legs are on the boulder with curled up claws. Merlin is looking up towards the peek of the Eiger, raising the magic staff to cast a spell, connecting the scene to the surrounding area. On his shoulder sits a crow, looking down at the sword, witnessing the event. The sword and the staff are made of ice, while the Magicians cloak is made to look like flowing fabric. The dragon's skin has a regular pattern of scales and the horns on his head are then repeated along the ridge of the neck as smaller barbed hooks. The wings are relaxed and flowing off the edge of the block and the tail is curled up and adorned with a jagged mace.
