This is an introductory clothing design class that will focus on learning the basic skills required to design and build clothing, costumes and fashions. It teaches students the aesthetic aspects of two and three-dimensional design necessary to create sketches, designs, and actual articles of clothing. This includes skills such as design cutting, draping and stitching. This course also studies fashion trends throughout history from ancient times to modern day and includes an understanding of cultural, social, political and economic influences on fashion design.

Recommended Placement: Completion of Fashion Design 

This course offers UC Fine Arts and CTE credits with hands-on learning focussed on introducing students to the fashion industry career pathways. This course explores different art mediums including technology, illustration, photography, cosmetology, sewing, and pattern making. Instruction focuses on clothing construction and design, the history of fashion, the study of fashion trends and advanced sewing techniques. Students create a culminating portfolio of work and participate in a production to showcase their designs. The goal of the program is to engage students in the fashion industry, gaining the necessary skills in moving forward to applying for entry-level retail positions, internships, and colleges in the United States and abroad. The class focuses on academic, technical skills, and employability practices. Students will develop personal and professional skills in the classroom that will transfer to the workplace.
