ART ELECTIVES

INTRODUCTION TO ART

Credits: 5 per semester

 This course is designed to introduce the basic art elements through the use of a variety of media and techniques including  drawing, painting, printmaking, cartooning, sculpture, design, crafts, art history and multicultural appreciation. This is a yearlong alternating block course that students can take in any sequence (fall, then spring, or spring before fall). 

PAINTING & DRAWING

This year-long course will develop skills in painting and drawing.  Students will develop artistic concepts and observational drawing techniques, while also harnessing their own creativity and imagination.  Students will gain experience with various media, such as: graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, colored pencils, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, etc....  This year-long course can be taken in any sequence (fall, then spring, or spring before fall).

Recommended Placement: A C or better grade for both semesters of Drawing and Painting or teacher approval

Over the course of the year, students in this class work to expand their knowledge and application of various artistic processes, using a variety of mediums and techniques. In a more open art studio setting, students will focus on building a portfolio demonstrating their continuing study in art and exploring their own creative voice and style.  Concepts in art criticism and art appreciation will continue in this course. 

AP DRAWING

Recommended Placement: A passing grade for both semesters of Advanced Drawing and Painting. (or teacher approval).  Students must submit an application and portfolio. ‘C’ or better required for 1st semester to continue to 2nd semester.

This year-long class is an intensive challenge to develop a comprehensive portfolio for submission to the College Board, which primarily focuses on paintings and drawings. In this course, students will demonstrate their accomplishment in both quality of work and their ability to explore and convey more conceptual ideas. Students must be able to read and follow instructions independently, contribute to class critiques/discussions, and ask for clarification when needed.
