Please note that the State of PA requires tutors to have a Bachelor’s Degree. Tutor Assistants and other volunteers do not require a degree.
Step 1: Application
Please complete the Frontline application on the LIU12 website. The Job ID# is 672 (Literacy Council Volunteers). Choose “Adams” for your area of service.
Step 2: Clearances
The State of PA requires all volunteers working with children and at risk adults to provide background checks. This is also a part of the Frontline application process. If you don’t have a digital copy of the background checks, your original copies can be scanned and uploaded to your application here in the ACLC office for your convenience. Please note the following:
PA STATE CHECKS:
If an applicant needs to acquire/renew background checks: PA State Criminal Background and PA State Child Abuse Background checks are free of charge for Volunteers (see Instruction Page in the application for more information on completing these checks).
FBI CHECKS:
FBI Fingerprinting is NOT required if an applicant has resided in PA for over 10 years. The applicant will be asked to sign a waiver during the online application process.
FBI Fingerprinting is required if an applicant has not been a PA State resident for 10+ years. Background checks will be done through IdentoGO (CODE: 1KG6S7) and can be scheduled at LIU 12 New Oxford or other IdentoGo locations. Applicants are responsible for the associated fee and will not be reimbursed by LIU12. The fee is around $25.
Step 3: Notify Program Coordinator
After you complete and submit everything, please inform Nicole Buhrman (nlbuhrman@iu12.org or 717-479-7032) that your application is complete and you’re ready to begin your training modules.
Step 4: PD Portal Training Modules
All incoming tutors are required to complete nine Tutor Training Modules through the Pennsylvania Adult Education Resources website. These modules will help tutors understand program expectations, best practices to assist students, and other useful tools and strategies. The Program Coordinator will request an account for you, an email will be sent to you from PA Adult Education Resources with instructions. We ask that you complete the modules within 4 weeks. Each of these modules takes approximately 1 hour and will need an 80% or higher on the end-of-module quiz in order to receive its corresponding certificate. Once a module is completed, please provide the office with a copy of the certificate, and we will add these to your new tutor file.
Step 5: Orientation
Once steps 1-4 are completed, the Program Coordinator will schedule an in-depth overview of the program and provide a new tutor packet with helpful information. This meeting may last about an hour to an hour and a half.
Step 6: Matching Students and Tutors
Finally! The Program Coordinator (Nicole) and Student Case Manager (Lynsie) work closely to place students and tutors based schedules, student levels, etc.
