I will be shadowing Dr. Linda DiMeglio in the near future to see what clinical care work looks like, and what it all requires.
I will be job shadowing more research coordinators within the team to get a sense of what the process of clinical research is. In order to learn more on obtaining consent from patients, I have read the actual forms that the research team provides to individuals that they are interested in studying.
Recently I have shadowed a research coordinators patient T1DES study visit. I learned that patients should have a blood sugar level of 200 or less to begin this study, and after 10 a.m. the body starts to produce hormones. This body function occurs and raises the blood sugar levels, and therefore the study may not be done after or close to 10 a.m.
I have already read through many readings speaking on Type 1 Diabetes. I have learned more on what genes cause individuals to develop type 1 diabetes, and have learned that the blood sugar levels should be no less than 70, but no higher than 200. To learn more, I hope to inquire my supervisor over more readings on Type 1 Diabetes.
Specific experiences that I will need to gain this year is learning how research is done, and how individuals go about doing their own research. Research is something that I seem to be baffled by. I believe that the fact that there are no directions on where to go, but you certainly must start on where the last person left off is something that seems to difficult to conduct. For example, I have always been in settings of where there are directions to follow, and you work your way towards achieving what everyone else is getting as a result. However, with research, you will never know the actual outcome, you may predict it, but you do not have a definite answer. I believe that the main factor that scares me about research is that sometimes you may be getting closer and closer to an answer, but sometimes you may just in a constant loop of going back in circles, and not getting anywhere near the answer.
My current academic goal is to achieve entry into medical school to become an anesthesiologist. Growing up with two other siblings, and then my mom birthing my youngest sister when I was at a wise, understanding age was a very beautiful thing to see. It was mesmerizing seeing the formation of my sister from flourishing in my moms stomach to her being in my arms for the first time. The moments after my sister was brought into this world was a beautiful experience for my whole family and I, and I am certainly grateful for the epidural my mom received because she had less of a hard time, and was able to enjoy some of the process of the childbirth due to the epidural. I find childbirth such a beautiful process, I'd want to become an anesthesiologist to administer the epidural for women to have beautiful , pain-free memories of their child's birth.
Becoming an anesthesiologist is the correct path for me because from recent participation in shadowing professionals, and simply shadowing research coordinators in my internship, I know that I'd love to be interacting with patients, and being in a hospital or small health care office setting. I've always loved the warm feeling I receive going into my doctors office, and I love the small talk my doctor has with me to not only provide me better health, but to also give me some small advice for my education and pursuing my dream profession. I'd love to provide back in the same way, but as an anesthesiologist, and give patients a warm feeling of comfort and safety when they are under my care. To achieve my dream profession of being an anesthesiologist I am shadowing anesthesiologist to gain a larger grasp of what this job all entails, and to see how my future days will look like.
Being a current undergraduate at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) has allowed me to be in close proximity to the IU School of Medicine, and I even have a professor who just happens to also teach in the IU School of Medicine and work as a professor in the Anesthesia department which has allowed me to meet with my professor and get connected through him to anesthesiologist. Therefore, within arms reach I have the ability to shadow anesthesiologist in the local area who went to the IU School of Medicine, which is the dream medical school I'd like to attend. This way I may explore more into what it takes to being an anesthesiologist, specifically getting advice from someone who has the profession I'd like, and who attended the school I'd like to gain entry into.
I am very certain that I would excel in a family medicine or anesthesia specialty because they contain many characteristics of what I look for as future professions. I am still exploring options because I know there are many other professions that might fit even more into what I'm looking for, but with a huge variety, it may just be that it is unknown to me right now what else there is out there. This internship allowed me to shadow and see the research site of things, and it made me realize that I would want a profession with much more hands on experiences, and much more patient interaction, and something that always has you on the go! Before, I was debating on whether interacting with patients would be something I'd like, and now after shadowing patient visits I've realized that I enjoy being with the patients.
I am a chemistry major, and I have taken many courses which have been manageable, but I still have many to go. Thus, I hope that my more advanced courses such a biochemistry, physical chemistry, and other more challenging classes will allow me to see if I have the endurance to actually push through medical school, and residency.
