My name is Yuritzi Avila-Robledo and I'm a chemistry major following the pre-medicine route. Chemistry has been a huge interest of mine ever since freshman year in high school. I loved the idea that math was a part of the class, but it wasn't a full on math course. I loved the idea of plugging and chugging to see the differences in pressure, temperature, and volume. It was a subject that I really enjoyed studying for, and working on homework for in my high school years, and so I decided to pursue a major in it!
My career goal is to be a professional somewhere within the medical field, but the ultimate goal would be to become an anesthesiologist. I have previously participated in a summer program at Eli Lilly and Company through the Center for Leadership Development program. I've worked on my personal growth and have grown my connections by participating in an internship coming out of high school and through several volunteer experiences. I believe that these experiences have allowed me to be a well-rounded hard worker.
A good team member is one who can communicate well, be respectful, and completes tasks on time. I personally have the qualities of being a team member who is always on time, is respectful and accepting of anyone and everyone. I also am very productive, and complete tasks on time. I would personally like to work on my communication skills since I tend to hold things in due to my intentions of not wanting to interrupt anyone's time.
My skill sets of being a great team member have expanding greatly since the age of 17 when I obtained my first part time job. I have always been a hard worker, but balancing school and a part time job has been a challenge that has strengthened me for the better. I have become an amazing team member by always coming in to work, picking up shifts when needed, completing all of my tasks to the last minute of my shift, and stopping one of my tasks to help anyone else. I truly believe having a part time job has molded me into the team member I am today, and I will still continue to grow a new mold every single different position I hold.
After spending a few months observing professionals in the workplace I have seen many different behaviors such as being inclusive of anyone and everyone in the area, and being very interactive with everyone. I aspire to be that one individual in the work area that loves to include everyone in the conversation, the one who smiles and anyone who is in the room, the one that see a new person and rushes to ask their name, and the one who just makes everyone feel included and reassures them that they're in a safe space.
Being computer science teaching assistant sometimes I receive emails from students asking for help, but there are some students who have a much harder time and really need a lot of time and attention to get the ball rolling on their assignments. I had a particular student who emailed me for help , as for the student was completely stuck on what the assignment was about, what to do with the assignment, and how to even start it. This was a tough one as for the students assignment was due at midnight. I took into consideration that every student has a life outside of school, and so instead of leaving it for their responsibility I started from the bottom. I told the student what videos to watch, what websites gave perfect examples for every homework problem, etc.
It was a different experience as I had never had a student come to me completely unprepared. However, instead of allowing the student to stress, and not understand the assignment, and just submit whatever it may have been, I broke the situation down. I slowly but surely introduced the topic to the student, then I gave the resources for every problem. My skills in this situation were my communication skills, and empathy skills. I knew that the student may have had a rough day, or week, and allowed the situation to not be a big stress to them. I also did great in communicating with them about what the assignment was, what videos may help, and what perfect examples are out there. My challenge was trying to explain a not large, but not so small chapter to a student when the assignment was due in under 4 hours. As a result of me stepping in, I was able to allow this student to relax, and understand their side of the story, and really let them know that their situation was fine, and that it was completely understandable.
