The details of my internship...

The Projects

Dr. Ed Greenfield's research lab "focus[es] on cell culture and/or mouse models of bone loss/turnover during aging, inflammation, infection, fracture healing, implant integration, etc." Stefanie Simpson, Shota Higashihira, and Emily Seiden all perform their own projects under this topic. Their projects are detailed below. You can also find the links to page that focuses on my successes and challenges within the internship and my expectations versus the reality of my internship.

Stefanie Simpson

Stefanie is a research analysist.

Stefanie's project focuses on inflammation in orthopaedic aseptic implant loosening caused by wear and accumulation of implant particles. The goal of the project is to better understand and mitigate this inflammation through pharmacotherapies.

Shota Higashihira

Shota is a orthopedic surgeon

Shota is evaluating the effect of the new antibiotic on biofilms in orthopedic joint implant infections using mice of implant infection model.

Emily Seiden

Emily is a grad student at IU

Emily is focusing on repurposing already FDA approved oncology drugs to treat metastatic osteosarcoma. Specifically, Romidepsin which is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that was identified as a promising therapeutic through a 3D in vitro spheroid method. The future directions for this project include determining whether romidepsin is effective in patient derived spheroids and also in a mouse model of osteosarcoma. The results of this project’s experiments could lead to a canine clinical trial.
