Course: SPEA-L389 - Independent Readings
Role: Course Creator & Writer | Summer 2025
For my independent reading project, I designed and wrote an eight-week asynchronous course titled History of Leadership Studies, though I called it Leadership Across the Ages. The course traces how leadership ideas have evolved across time, explaining the historical movements and cultural contexts that shaped how people viewed leadership in each era and why those views still matter today. My goal was to design a course that made leadership theory meaningful and accessible not only to Community and Organizational Leadership students, but also to students in other programs such as history, philosophy, and business, etc.
This project strengthened my research, instructional design, and communication skills while reinforcing the COLS learning outcome Apply techniques for effective communication in a variety of workplace contexts. It also reflects the IU Indianapolis Profile of an Innovator, as I combined creativity and scholarship to design a course that bridges history, theory, and modern practice.
Developing this course reminded me that leadership—and learning—are both lifelong acts of curiosity, context, and connection.
