Work

Kroger

My first job was at Kroger, sophomore year in high school. I worked there for about 18 months. Working in retail and customer service for the first time was very eye opening. I had to learn how to talk to customers, whether it was a happy customer or unhappy customer. Regardless, I learned that I still needed to be friendly and polite. I tried my best to interact with as many customers I could. This is job also taught me how to deal with questions and complaints. Being a cashier at Kroger was my first work experience I had with customer service that taught me influential communication skills.  One of my goals for my internship was to learn how to talk to patients and how to address different issues.

Prime Car Wash

My second  job was at Prime Car Wash. I started working here junior year in high school. We clean the exterior and interior of cars, as well as selling memberships. I knew that the car wash was very different from Kroger instantly. It is hard to satisfy all customers in a timely and efficient manner. This job has taught me how to work under pressure, take initiative,  work as a team, and how to problem solve. Customer service is all we do. I have to make sure the car is cleaned right and fast before I present it to the customer. We work as a team to make sure the cars are in top condition to satisfy the customers, so they can come back and eventually get a membership. This ties into my career goals because not a lot of people like going to the dentist because of past experiences. I will have to make sure each patient get the best experience and wants to come back and refer me to people they know. I decided to take a leave absence at the end of 2020 due to the pandemic. I felt like I outgrew the workplace and decided to officially leave the job in February  of 2021.

Amazon

My third job was at Amazon Logistics. I was till working at Prime Car Wash too. I started here my senior year in high school and stayed there for about 14 months. This job required me to make sure packages were in the right place to be delivered. It was a fun and invigorating job. I worked a lot with my managers and the Amazon delivery drivers. Amazon logistics required attention to detail and time management. If a package was in the wrong place, it had to be found and put in the right place in a timely manner before the vans arrived to pick up the packages. We received about fifteen thousand to twenty thousand packages within a five hour block that had to be sorted.  Improving my time management will help with managing school, work, and my internship.

Sam's Club

In my sophomore year in college, I started working at Sam's Club. I needed a change of scenery and I needed more income, so I began working here in January of 2021. I had not been in a store setting in years, so it was a bit of an adjustment. When I first began working at Sam's Club, I worked as a merchandiser in the clothing department. I had to fix the tables and racks with the clothing on them and keep them full as well as make sure the signage was correct. I interacted with customers regularly, helping them find clothes for themselves, their children, mom, dad, friend, and other loved ones. I also helped customers find  non-clothing items on the floor. Working in clothing was not something I enjoyed, so I ventured out and started working in the Café once it reopened from being closed due to the pandemic. I enjoyed the short amount of time I spent in there due to the fast pace needed in the department. I floated to a few other departments but I still do not enjoy clothing, so I discussed with a manager transferring to the Bakery. I started working in the Bakery and I enjoy my time there. The work is fast paced and I have learned how to do a few basic cake decorating techniques as well as packaging all the baked goods. I enjoyed helping customers with cake designs and orders. I have learned that sometimes certain positions do not fit my personality, and that it is okay to venture out and explore. I have thought about different specialties in the dental field and I am even more excited to explore each one as I get closer to going to dental school!
