Goals

One of my goals for is to gain research skills and to be able to get a more in depth look at all that goes on behind the scenes of research. At my site I will be shadowing patients, doctors, different neuropysch test that are conducted as well as different imaging scans that will be done. I will be trained to do data entry as well as be trained on how to prep blood kits which is something very important for our site. It is important to have a good understanding and I will also be doing protocol training.

With this internship another one of my goals is to become a very efficient communicater. I think that communication is key especially when working in a research setting. As of now I have learned that at our site everybody likes to communicate so that things can run as smooth as possible without any complications. This goal will also allow me to further develop as an employee and co-worker. The pandemic we are currently living through has made a huge impact in how much and how important it is for one to communicate. With these hard times it is crucial for all of us to stay up to date with what is going on in the office and what tasks still need to be completely prior to a patient visit and after the patients visit.

Through my internship I will be given the opportunity to shadow various different health care professionals and various different procedures that are done in order to obtain the information needed. Shadowing will definitely allow me to explore and learn more about other careers. Although shadowing at the moment may be harder due to COVID restrictions I am eager to learn new things.

Trainings and Events Online

When I started my internship my goal was to grow as a professional, so far I have been able to do that by seeing how our physician at the site works, supervisors, coordinators and other important people at the site that are crucial to allowing LEADS to continue growing. I have attending various of different trainings and events that are offered through my site which have helped me better understand things that are changing at the site or being updated. I have taken advantage of them as they are helping me be better at what I do at the site. For example, REDCap is one of the places where we enter data for our participants so that it is all in a secure place and can be referenced back to easily. I have seen various of REDCap training videos which have helped me enter the participants data correctly. I have also been able to do stuff with the IADC which is very important to the study. It is important because it allows data to be harmonized, builds architecture and data access points, breaks down silos, develops data request, hands off integrated data set and more.

Goals and Next Steps

I am sure that the career option I have decided on is the correct one for me as of now based off of my experience with interning for LEADS. My internship allowed me to confirm with the shadowing experience I got and seeing all the work Dr. Apostolova puts in. My career goals have not changed but my academic goals have. My academic goals changed because I decided to add a chemistry minor. Although it is still too early for me to apply to PA school I know that it will get here very soon so I know that it is important for me to start looking at the application more in depth as well as different schools. To reach my goals for this semester I need to stay focused and motivated. I need to get more experience in shadowing different health care professions. From the mid-year workshop I am taking away different ways I can communicate my work as well as different ways that I can summarize in a short yet thorough way my work like I did for my elevator pitch.
