There was a patient that had chronic pain in their foot after a surgery that left them unable to plant their toes on the ground. I was told to find a pedorthotist (a person who makes orthotics specifically for foot related comfort) and I not only found one for them, but also found multiple podiatrists that they could be referred to in order to receive a second opinion on their foot. I felt like an active member of the team, and useful, which was very nice.
This experience has solidified my want to become a medical professional so I can continue to help patients and increase their access to good, thorough care.
The most challenging part of my experience at this site has definitely been my supervisor’s expectation that I lead the end-of-clinic debrief. I ask questions and write down responses. I am not very good at addressing groups on large, so this is pretty nerve wracking. But this is good for me as it is stretching my comfort zones and allowing me to build my confidence.
The team at the clinic helps me get through this by being respectful and encouraging. They are patient and help me step out of my shell so I can continue to grow.
