LEAP Indiana Informal Faculty Forums

This summer, LEAP Indiana offered a series of forums in which faculty discussed their ideas and concerns regarding space and instructional responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are offering informal follow-up discussions during the next several weeks. Even if you were not able to join us this summer, please plan to join us this fall.

The following topical areas were highlighted:

Studios
Instructors from drawing, painting, architectural design, ceramics, photography, and other studio-based disciplines had the opportunity to discuss challenges, and think broadly about achieving student learning outcomes in studio spaces and instruction that require close contact and ongoing feedback on student work.

Facilitator: Sarah Ackermann, BSU

Languages
Learning another language is challenging in hybrid and online environments because faculty need to think about best practices for allowing student expression of words, phrases, and dialogue in campus environments where space may be limited or social distancing is in effect.

Facilitator: Julia Baumgardt, Marian University

Labs
Disciplines that offer laboratory experiences will gather to discuss specific challenges in Science courses such as (but not limited to) chemistry, physics, geology, and biology that complement student learning with a structured, applied experience in the lab. Accomplishing this in a virtual setting is a unique challenge.

Facilitator: Gina Londino-Smolar, IUPUI

Performance Arts
This forum seeks colleagues who are involved with disciplines such as theatre, dance, and music. Instruction in the performing arts involve physical spaces and interactions that present challenges in hybrid and online environments, and instructors will have the opportunity to receive collegial support in these areas.

Facilitator: Christie Zimmerman, BSU

First-Year Experience and Co-Curricular Learning
This forum will be offered for both faculty and staff who engage with first-year students on campus or other orientation-style programs. Creating a sense of belonging and offering a variety of student engagement opportunities will be discussed.

Facilitator: Lisa Angermeier, IUPUI

November 15-16, 2019 - Crowne Plaza Indianapolis, IN

In higher education, we want the entry to the classroom to be democratic and the exit to lead to meaningful lives. And in alignment with the former, our classes are filled with a wide variety of students, coming to us with successes and failures, trials and tribulations, moods, longer and shorter attention spans, differing limits on working memory, large support systems, isolated, living with privilege, overcoming poverty, mainstream, marginalized, healthy, ill, and on and on. This diversity is what we want, and it presents great challenges and great opportunity for learning.
