INTRODUCTION
Showcase 2 of my Honors ePortfolio includes a presentation completed as part of BIOL-K 324 Cell Biology in Spring 2024.
As a part of the cell biology course I took in Spring 2024, I created this presentation to inform my colleagues of how the topic can be applied to solving forensic cases. I started my college career in Fall 2022 studying for a B.S. in Forensic & Investigative Sciences, and in Fall 2023 I decided to pursue a B.S. in Biology as well. My excitement for the two fields I was studying was heightened when I took the cell biology course in Spring 2024 and realized the connections that I would be able to create between the two. With this project, I hoped to reach those interested in the forensic science community and inform individuals of its connections to cell biology. Completing this project allowed me to critically analyze the information received from the course to be able to apply it to my field of interest.
This page of my ePortfolio includes:
Presentation: I presented this work for the cell biology course to connect my future degree in forensic science to my newly added biology degree.
Skills Development: The useful skills I gained and expanded as a result of crafting this presentation.
Reflection: How this project assisted in my academic development through making analytical connections and critically thinking about the two degrees I am studying to receive.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
By engaging in this honors experience, I developed professional skills that I will carry into my future career. I polished skills in presention ability and time management. Additionally, I gained skills in content analysis and research exploration.
Presenting Ability
At the time of this presentation, I was in my second semester of college. The little experience I did have in presenting was minimal and not at a collegiate level. Through this presentation, I became proficient in creating a detailed presentation to accurately relay the information to other individuals.
Time Management
I was able to better my time management ability throughout the course of the project. I engaged in this experience as an addition to the other course work in the class. Therefore, completion of the project relied on my ability to balance the project, along with the other class work, in addition to my other courses and projects.
Content Analysis
By digesting the in depth information relating to cell biology and synthesizing the forensic concepts that relate to the subject, I was able to develop my ability to critically analyze information. In typical courses, the information is often presented, learned, and applied. By creating this presentation, I relied on my critical thinking skills to analyze the course information and create a cohesive representation of how that relates to forensic science.
Research Exploration
I gained the new skill of research exploration throughout my work on this presentation. Researching specific forensic cases in which cell biology was utilized to help identify an individual. Identifying these cases, learning about the complex information, then relaying that information in a digestible manner to my classmates helped develop my ability to comprehend complex research.
REFLECTION
Engaging in this experience as a part of the IUI Honors College has allowed me to acquire skills that will be beneficial in my future professional career. Creating this showcase of my combined forensic science and biology knowledge demonstrates my attention to detail and ability to analyze complex information, skills that will both be invaluable in my future field. I created this project in the early stages of my college career, and I believe that it was my best work for the knowledge and experiences that I had at the time. However, I now have more knowledge and experience in both the fields of forensic science and biology. This presentation represents what I believed to be extremely complex information, which I now understand has the potential to be much more complex and sophisticated. Reflecting on this project helps me visualize just how far I have come throughout my time in college and demonstrates my intellectual growth. For example, the slides depicted above can, on occasion, be wordy and filled with text. Now, I would create these slides with the same accurate information, but put more creative effort into them. I would create slides that have more visuals and rely on my presenting skills to convey the information to my audience.
