The On-Campus Internship Program is an opportunity for students to explore their interests and get experience. Students in the program develop professional skills, network, and grow their knowledge. For this program, I had decided to be the Career Services Intern for the Office of Student Employment.
For my position as the Career Services Intern, I would help out with:
Developing and modifying presentations that we would then present to students regarding our office resources, skill presentations, and resume/cover letter presentations.
Serve as a peer mentor for the Hire Achievers Series, which is an internship program for students to get experience in a field that they're inteested in.
Assist students with help regarding resumes, cover letters, or job-search help.
We would also review resumes and get training for professional development.
Assist other supervisors with event needs such as part-time job fair, Fall Career Fair events, and more.
Create a LinkedIn Tipsheet for students to have access to that would them elevate their profiles.
Work with other departments on-campus to provide events resources for students, such as Virtual Speech (Interview Practice using VR).
Assist with other project needs as the year went along.
During my time as the Career Services Intern, I partnered with the University Library to introduce VirtualSpeech, a virtual reality headset that allows students to practice interviews and presentations. We hosted several drop-in events where students could grab popcorn, receive help with résumés, cover letters, and job searches, and try out the VR headset for interview practice. The initiative was a great success, and I even connected with the CEO of VirtualSpeech on LinkedIn to share my experience.
I had the opportunity to take a LinkedIn Masterclass by Jeremy Schifeling, who used to be a former LinkedIn employee, and has also worked with Google and Apple in the past. Through this masterclass, I got to learn about elevating my profile, learn about networking and growing my network, and learning the importance of learning how to apply and keep an eye out for jobs and making sure your profile stands out. I created a LinkedIn TipSheet where students would be able to learn more about how they can grow their tools on linkedin and learn how to use it, how to network, and how to find jobs.
From April 14th–18th, the Office of Student Employment partnered with various departments across campus to host events and provide resources in celebration of all student employees. I had the opportunity to assist with the planning and execution of several events throughout the week. I helped with setup and teardown for both our Kickoff Event and the Student Employee Awards Ceremony.
Additionally, I contributed to the planning of activities for our office celebration, creating fun and engaging experiences for fellow interns. For our Campus NSEA Week Block Party, I supported event logistics by coordinating room reservations, securing a photographer, booking our campus mascot, organizing decorations, and ensuring we had all necessary supplies for activities, snacks, and volunteers. It was a rewarding week that not only deepened my event planning experience but also helped me develop personal skills such as patience, compassion, and courageous leadership.
As soon as I was hired, I was immediately involved in summer tabling for incoming first year students to help introduce them to the Office of Student Employment. Once the school year began, I continued supporting tabling events held around campus several times a month. At these events, I engaged with students to share information about our office, promote upcoming events, and provide helpful resources.
I also played a key role in coordinating these efforts by reaching out to departments for tabling approval, selecting dates, and preparing supplies and interactive games that helped students learn more about our services. This experience was incredibly valuable and allowed me to network with students and campus partners while strengthening my communication and outreach skills.
In this role, our main priority was to be consistently available for students. We scheduled weekly appointments where students could receive support with résumés, cover letters, or job searches. As my time in the office progressed, we continued to expand our offerings to include additional resources such as professional headshots and interview preparation.
We also held weekly drop-in hours for students seeking quick guidance on any of our services. This experience taught me how to confidently engage with new people, grow my network, and strengthen my communication skills. It also helped me improve my own résumé and cover letter writing while learning to manage my time effectively and balancing student appointments with my other responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed.
Skills I learned in this internship:
Event planning
Logistics
Career Advising
Professional Development
Time Management
Marketing
Content Creation
Communication
Project Management
Adaptability
Customer Service
Growth Mindset
Positive Work Ethic
Through this internship, I had the incredible opportunity to expand my mindset by exploring new ways to grow my network, develop professionally, and take on projects outside of my comfort zone. Collaborating with students and staff taught me to be more open to new ideas and adapt to different team dynamics. While the role didn’t involve traditional event management, I still gained many transferable skills that will benefit me in future roles.
