Providing the knowledge and tools you need to build an effective and professional ePortfolio
The first step is selecting the platform used to build your ePortfolio. Web-design platforms such as Google Sites and Wix good options. Both of these platforms are supported by the ePortfolio studio here on campus.
When selecting a platform consider
How much freedom do you want with design?
How much time can you commit to the portfolio?
Is this the portfolio you are going to carry on to your final honors ePortfolio?
After you've selected and accessed a platform, it's time to select a template. Using a template helps make the ePortfolio design process less intimidating.
When selecting a template consider
Is this template managable for me? Are there lots of excess pages or features I don't want in my final design?
Is the template professional? Does it fit the standard of the field I am pursuing? Would my target audience think its appropriate?
Does the base design reflect my unique personality? After redesigning it would it?

Text is the first of three elements we will cover adding to your ePortfolio.
Text allows you to
Describe artifacts & experiences
Reflect on artifacts & expereinces and growth from them
Provide context about yourself in a professional manner
When adding text consider
The font used
The size of text
Spacing and orientation of text
Keep these details consitent for a professional looking site
Images are another element that we will cover adding to your ePortfolio. Images are an excellent way to fill negative space on pages and provide easy visual examples or context what you're saying.
Images allow you to
Provide context to text or reference what is being discussed in text
Make your ePortfolio more visually interactive
Add to aesthetic value of your ePortfolio
When adding images consider
Relevance of image to page or topic
Consistency of image type
Image placement on the page
Any images you use on your ePortfolio must be used with permission. If you use photos found online, they must be free use or lisensed for use.
As an IU student you have access to free images from Adobe Stock.
Other sources of liscened or free images include:
Media from WIX
Free use images collections
Personal photos/images
The last element we'll cover is hyperlinks.
Hyperlinks allow you to
Link to referenced material or content
Add navigability to your ePortfolio
There are two types of hyperlinks:
Internal Navigation Hyperlinks
Link to pages within the ePortfolio
Provides navigation to ePortfolio
Allows for link to sections when referencing to connect areas of internal redundancy in your ePortfolio
External Navigation Hyperlinks
Link to webpages outside of ePortfolio

A well designed ePortfolio displays its contents in a way that is easily viewable, navigable, and interesting for the viewer. To achieve this we utilize the general 3X5 design rule. This rule is a general guideline and is not a requirement, but rather a check to ensure you are using effective design strategies and layouts to display your ePortfolios contents.
Images are a good tool to break up large walls of text, fill negative space, add movement, and provide visual interest to your ePortfolio. Using personal images you've captured is a great way to add a personal touch to your ePortfolio.
Pull-out quotes are segments of your text that are highlighted in a visible way outside of the paragraph. Try to pull quotes that are impactful or express the sentiment of your larger paragraphs.
Hyperlinks can be used for more than just navigation. Link to referenced material to add context to your ePortfolio and to connect your ePortfolio to other bodies of work you've created.
Contextualizing moments are instances of text, images, hyperlinks, or pull-out quotes that provide context within your ePortfolio. These instance of context can help create a sense of cohesiveness within the ePortoflio and can help tell a story within your portfolio. An ePortfolio with an throughline story of your journey, goals, and passion are the basis of a truly great ePortoflio
These are design elements that modify text placement and organization to enhance readability and engagement of your ePortfolio. No one wants to read a wall of text, so try breaking it up. A general rule of thumb is no more than 9 lines in a paragraph. Other paragraph principles include varying the length of paragraphs, including different text placements, and avoiding dense and repetive writing.
