Geo-Equity Modules
*GEMs
What are GEMs?
Geo-Equity Modules (GEMs) are classroom activities centered around real-life case studies involving environmental issues associated with ethical and equity-related issues. The activities can be completed in one 50-75 minute class period after students complete a homework assignment based on content in one of the GEM case studies (linked below and in the top menu bar).
All files linked to the right should be downloaded to your own device to distribute, print, or edit.
How to use GEMs in your course
Pre-class tasks
Prior to the class period where the module will be discussed, ask students to review the page for their assigned GEM by clicking the appropriate link above and reading the case study.
Students should complete the GEM Homework Worksheet before coming to the class period where the GEM will be discussed. They should bring a completed copy with them to class.
In class tasks
Students should be organized into groups of 3-4. They will work in these groups to fill out the GEM Group Worksheet based on their reading of the case study and their homework worksheets. This will take ~45-60 minutes.
When all groups have completed the Group Worksheet, the instructor may lead a whole group discussion by asking students to share their 'revised solutions' and attempt to come to a consensus as to one 'best solution'.
Post-class tasks
Students should reflect on their experiences participating in the activity by responding to prompts in the GEM Reflection.
