Throughout my academic and professional journey, I’ve taken on a variety of roles that have helped me grow personally and professionally. Below are three key experiences that have shaped my understanding of leadership, communication, and care. These are skills I plan to carry into my future career.
September 2023 – May 2024
Volunteering at Riley Hospital gave me the opportunity to interact directly with families going through difficult times. I helped overnight admissions by providing information about available services like the Ronald McDonald House and helped families navigate the hospital.
This role taught me how to be compassionate, calm under pressure, and a clear communicator. I learned how much small acts of kindness and direction can mean to people in healthcare settings. These soft skills will be valuable as I move into leadership roles that require empathy and strong communication with both residents and families.
November 2021 – May 2024
Working in a fast-paced restaurant environment gave me some of my earliest leadership experience. As a Shift Lead, I managed a team, trained new employees, and made sure everything ran smoothly, even during our busiest shifts. I also handled customer issues and helped improve our customer satisfaction scores. This job helped me build confidence in managing people, handling conflict, and staying organized under pressure. These experiences helped prepare me to lead teams in healthcare, where strong teamwork and problem-solving are just as important.
May 2024 – July 2024
During my operations internship at BHI Senior Living, I had the chance to experience the day-to-day workings of a senior living community. I supported several departments, including administration, human resources, and community engagement. Whether I was stepping in at the front desk, helping with onboarding paperwork, or organizing "Longest Day" events, I was constantly learning how each piece of the organization works together to create a supportive environment for residents and staff.
One of the most meaningful parts of this internship was auditing the Journey Program. I reviewed over 50 policies and helped create a master list to bring more clarity and consistency across the community. This experience taught me the importance of policy, process, and teamwork in long-term care.
This internship helped me build confidence, improve my communication skills, and better understand what it takes to manage a healthcare facility. It confirmed that this is the kind of work I want to continue doing as I work toward becoming an Executive Director or Administrator.
