During my time in college, I was able to complete meaningful projects that enhanced my professional growth.
The ethics podcast is a group assignment for my Health Administration Ethics class. My group was assigned the book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman, which tells the story of a Hmong family and their American doctors, highlighting the collision of the two cultures. This book has the greatest impact on me for my professional success because it gives me an understanding of how misunderstandings in different cultures and medical practices can affect the patient's health outcome negatively. I learned about the importance of knowing the principles of patients' autonomy, ethical theories, and ethical terms such as non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. I also learned the importance of patients' consent and their right to refuse treatment and get full information about their treatment. This story also really sympathizes with my family's experience in healthcare, as we also come from different cultural values and are used to following cultural medical practices in Asia. I encourage future healthcare readers to read this book.
The Strategic Planning in Healthcare Organization course prepares me as a future healthcare leader with the essential skills needed for strategic planning projects. I first completed the preliminary strategic plan individual assignment for my current internship site, The Barrington of Carmel, using SMART goals, service area, primary area analysis, and competitive and environmental analysis. Through SMART goals, I was able to identify the organization's strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, during the environmental analysis, I identified national trends that could impact the organization, such as the nursing shortage. I was then assigned a group project to develop strategic initiatives and action steps for the community in Hoosier Health Village. My strategic initiative focused on expanding sustainable landscaping through the development of gardens that will create an eco-friendly environment for customers. This project prepares me for future strategic planning when an organization may need new changes or effective marketing strategies to promote to the public.
