The writing in this reflection is about this author's experience writing the project and how this project will help in the future. This section also discusses how the class W-230 has improved the writing of the author.
My writing process before this class mostly involved just writing off the top of my head and editing later. This usually resulted in ok work but not great work. This class taught me to categorize my writing topics into sub-sections of characteristics like with the grid of science vs scientific writing characteristics. This helps me see better the characteristics of different types of writing and should help me in organizing my writing in the future. Writing a review on a literature topic was very challenging. Between picking sources to use, finding what topics they cover that may align in your topic, then picking ones that may work best. Then stitching all of the information together to create a review paper. It was really challenging. Writing an article based upon someone else's paper though was also extremely challenging to me, especially with a transition into a different field of science I know little about. These challenges though help me improve my writing as I take on angles previously not thought of by myself.
If I were to add this class to a resume, I would include the following points:
Experience in adapting to sudden challenges
Experience in writing in both scientific and science writing formats
I would say that I have experience writing in scientific and science writing formats as well as experience in searching for sources. I have experience writing papers in an IMRD format from this class and making scientific writing. I also have learned skills on how to pivot directions suddenly to adapt to a new environment. I also have experience in categorizing sources based upon the contents on the writing. Overall, I would be a good fit for a job that may require me to search for sources and sorting them, adapting to unexpected changes, and writing in both scientific and science writing formats.
Having tight deadlines definitely motivated me into working through everything. I tend to procrastinate a lot in some classes, so having consistent deadlines for major checkpoints in the project made writing the entire paper much easier.
The ability to include links to outside sources within the text itself helped in the flow of the writing for me, as I could set a link to a complicated word instead of having to break the flow of writing to define the word. I also liked being able to cite sources in a similar way for the same reasons.
Some skills I learned while completing this project involve adapting to an entirely different field, and learning how to research effectively to understand a new topic.
These skills can adapt to a professional setting by allowing me to adapt to sudden challenges in a workspace while still being effective in my job. This would help me in being flexible in my job in the future.
This project will help me pursue my academic goals by improving my writing ability in a scientific format. This will help me in writing lab reports for my chemistry lab classes in the future semesters. Professionally, this project taught me a lot about making an E-portfolio which can be helpful in the process of searching for a professional at a better or similar level of a resume.
