About Me!

Major: Health Sciences on the Pre-med track

I decided to be a health sciences major to gain insight on the medical field and to gain relevant and useful knowledge on how to be the best future pediatrician that I can someday. The rigorous coursework of being on the pre-med track to graduate, has allowed me to me to have balance when presented with opportunities to grow.

My Experiences and Skills

My experiences and skills thus far have greatly helped me in achieving my goals before my internship. These experiences allowed me to develop skills that I have continued to expand on during my internship and are highlighted with each experience. I hope to continue utilizing these skills I have developed in my internship and in the past to develop more skills so that I can become the best professional team member as possible. I plan to gain more necessary skills by continuing to partake in more internship opportunities at Parkview Health this summer,  shadowing more healthcare professionals, work as a patient care technician through the school year next year, and continue to look for research opportunities in the next year. All of these experiences will allow me to continue exploring my career choices and confirming the right career path for me.  The skills and strengths I have acquired this last year include good communication, strong work-ethic, and resilience especially when balancing school and my internship.

Summer 2023 Plans

Below shows my plans for the summer and what I plan to continue to grow my self as a professional for my future career plans.

Parkview Health Internship

My plans for the summer with Parkview include to intern with the healthcare administrators. I will learn how the admin run the hospital and their duties. This will help me in my future career by understanding more of what healthcare administrators do for the hospital.

Physician Shadowing at Cardinal Health

I plan to shadow 2 local family health care providers in Huntington, IN who have opened their own health practice and masectomy clinic. This will allow me to gain more experience in seeing what a day in the life of a healthcare provider is and to also gain experience in my future career field.

Bobbi and Bricka

August 2020 - August 2021

In the school year of my senior year of high school I worked for Bobbi and Bricka in Huntington, IN in packaging. I developed the skill of being a leader greatly in this role by being able to help people efficiently and train them in the job setting of how to do their work. I developed the skill of communication by constantly working alongside with my supervisor in finding more efficient ways to train people or being able to package. I use these two life skills greatly in my internship setting because I work primarily by myself which has allowed me to be strong in my leadership skills that I developed previously and also my skill of communication is used greatly in my internship role because it has allowed me to have the proper communication skills when talking with patients at my internship site and my supervisor.

Parkview Huntington Hospital

May 2022 - July 2022

In the Summer of 2022,  I worked as an intern for Parkview Huntington Hospital. As an intern at Parkview, I worked as a patient care technician and worked in variety of different units shadowing, gaining patient care hours, and observing. The units I gained experience in included ICU, CCU, Family birthing center, ER, MIU, pediatrics, SAU, and surgery. I gained helpful skills such as the proper sterilization techniques, talking with patients, and many more skills. These skills greatly have transferred over to my internship site when needing to talk with patients and knowing relevant medical terminology when looking at medical documents.

Indianapolis Momentum Indy Volunteering

August 2022

I volunteered with the Indianapolis Momentum Indy and gained leadership skills as well as resilience in pushing through the day. I volunteered from the hours of 9 AM-7:30 PM and took part in activities such as picking up trash, assisting in taking down the event at the end, and setting up the course. When partaking in this opportunity to volunteer I learned how important it is to be apart of something bigger than yourself. By volunteering for this event it allowed for the event to take place and for the people at the event to be able to focus on the big things that might go wrong or that need to be helped with. The day was very long and hot, so resilience was a huge factor in continuing to push through the day and get things done.  Resilience is particularly useful in my internship experience because after attending class, being a part of a-lot of extracurricular activities, and having exams some weeks it gets very long to be able to continue to do my internship some days. Resilience allows me to continue working through my internship on the hard days and continue balancing everything else in my life too.

Fort Ben Volunteering

Worked alongside other volunteers to marshal the course for the marathon that takes place at Fort Ben.  I volunteered from 6 AM - 3 PM to make sure that the marathon went smoothly.

Phi Mu Fraternity

August 2022 - Current

Phi Mu's is a sorority on IUPUI's campus who's mission is to raise money for CMNH and our local hospital, Riley Hospital for Children. In my sorority, I have held a couple positions that have allowed me to grow and learn. The first position I have held is being Honor Committee  Chairwoman, to be in this position you have to uphold confidentiality to a very high standard in keeping information that is discussed in meetings confidential to only those who are involved in the situations. This has greatly allowed me to learn the importance of confidentiality and how it can imapct others when information is not being kept confidential. Another position I have held is being a New Member Assissant, I work greatly with our New Member Director in coordinating events for our new members in our chapter and overall making sure they feel seen, loved, and heard. This position has greatly given me the opportunity to show my love and caring for others. Lastly, the third position I have held is Internal Social Chairwoman. In this position I plan and coordinate our internal events such as Mom's Day, Dad's Day, and our two formals that we hold. This position has developed me into being a leader more than I thought was possible because I hold a great amount of responsibility in executing these events and making sure everyone is safe and having a good time.

Jagathon

August 2021 - Current

I have had the wonderful privilege to be apart of Jagathon for two years now and will be going into my third year this next year. Jagathon is a student run and lead organization on campus that raises money for Riley Hospital for Children. My first year in Jagathon I was a part of the Family Relations committee as the chair of fundraising, this past year I moved up to the executive board as the Director of Traditions, and this upcoming year for 2023 - 2024 I will be the Director of Family Relations. As the Director of Traditions, I planned and executed our traditional events such as Battleships that allow us to fundraise money for Riley. This year Battleships had it's most successful year and raised  over $2,500 in the event itself! As the Director of Traditions, I will work directly with Riley families to engage them in Jagathon and show our support and appreciation to them. At our capstone event this year on March 3rd - March 4th, our total fundraising amount was revealed to be over $300,000. This will allow over $300,000 of miracles to happen at Riley for so many kids!

Teamwork

My strengths as a team member are very good communication skills within my team and flexibility. Communication is one of my strengths because I am very good at communicating within a team environment what needs to be done, how things can be improved, and make sure that everyone is doing okay. In addition to communication, flexibility is also a strong skill of mine within a team setting because I  am always willing to make changes to anything I am doing and am willing to try something new for a better outcome.

In my previous experiences, I have learned as a team member that to be a good team member you have to listen and communicate. Feelings and decisions made in a team setting have to go both ways for things to work. I learned this greatly in my past internship at Parkview Health, I had to effectively communicate with my patients to help them get better and take care of them more efficiently.  When communicating as a team member, you have to pay attention to how others are feeling or you might make people feel excluded or unheard. I saw this greatly in my experience at Parkview when I was taking care of one of my patients. I took the extra time to listen to her and make her feel heard when she discussed the problems that she was having in her health. Because I took the extra time, she trusted to have me on her health care team and was more than willing to communicate with me anytime anything went wrong.

Although there is many pros of what I enjoy in the workplace setting, there is also many things I don't enjoy. One of the big things I have found that I don't like doing in the workplace setting is utilizing excel and recording data. These two things are not my favorite things to do when working, but I have found that the more that I do them the better I have continued to be at doing them. Through the last couple months at my internship site I have utilized excel and helped upload medical documents, although I don't enjoy these two things, my skills with them both in doing so have gotten tremendously better.
