Goals

Internship Goals

Learning Goal #1: Gain Knowledge about the field of sensory-motor systems

I will achieve this goal by understanding how to handle the animals in a lab setting. I will also be in charge of the training of animals on behavioral tasks for different projects going on in the lab. To fully achieve this goal, I need to pay close attention on the animal behavior while it performs the tasks. I can do this by taking notes on the behavior when I notice something out of the ordinary and make sure to mention that during the lab meetings.

During this past year, I have been placed in charge of the training for the rats for the main project going on in the lab. I take notes on their progress, and make adjustments to the freqeuncy of the impulse based on the rat's performance. During the lab meetings I report their progress through the week, and comment on whether or not they are ready to move on to the next level of the training.

Learning Goal #2: Learn more about practical skills related to animal research

I will achieve this goal by reading different research papers like ones that have been used in old studies in the lab, or ones that the lab is using as a reference for their current paper. I will also try to be an active participant in the lab discussions during the meetings on Thursday. Finally, to achieve this goal I will also make the most of my training time by asking and discussing questions with the other members of the lab.

After having been in my lab for a whole year, I have gotten a lot more involved in the lab discussions during the meetings every week and have been able to share my thoughts with the lab on what I have been accomplishing. While I did spend a lot of time training, I feel very comfortable working with the rats and performing the experiments on my own. I have also been reading different papers to spark ideas for future lab projects that I can help others with or perform myself.

Learning Goal #3: Build relationships with people in the lab

I will achieve this goal by becoming confident around my coworkers. I can do this by asking questions and fully understanding the day-to-day in the lab. I will also showcase my communicativeness by being on time and conversing with other members of the team through Slack. I will also come in to the lab every week even for minute tasks. This way I become more comfortable with the lab setting as well as the people I am working with.

My relationship with my coworkers has greatly improved throughout the course of the year. I feel comfortable talking to them, and sharing my thoughts on their experiments. I have been able to get involved with different experiments in the lab, and I feel like my ideas are being heard. I have been able to make my own schedule by communicating with my coworkers, and have started to understand the day-to-day in the lab.

Career Goals

My current academic goals are to attend medical school and become a physician. For a long time I have been very interested in the study of diagnosis, and I want to be able to be at the head of a healthcare team in terms of managing a patient's care. I have done a fair amount of work as a CNA which has given me a lot of insight into the different roles in the healthcare team. I want to be able to be a person people can come to when they are unsure of how to proceed, and a person that is able to investigate what is wrong with my patient. As a CNA, while I can notice changes in a person's demeanor or their actions, I don't have the education to be able to understand why that is. I want to be able to obtain that education so my knowledge can help the people around me.

For me, I am very sure of this career option, and would love to see it through till the very end. It fits in with my strengths of being communicative as well as being a critical thinker/problem solver. In this internship, I have been able to apply these skills to a workplace very out of my comfort zone. However, I chose this internship deliberately to be able to experience that. I have had a lot of experience with face to face interactions with patients, and I wanted to see more of the research side. In medicine, it is important to see if both primary care and research fit your interest as they are both incredibly prevalent in that field. My internship has only confirmed my goals, and I have made connections with people who can help me reach these goals as well. Using the knowledge I have obtained at this point I feel relatively comfortable making career decisions for myself. I know that I have people I can go to for advice whenever I feel unsure of a decision, and they can help me move in the right direction.

I wrote my initial responses in the fall semester, and looking back upon them in the spring semester I would still say I align myself with these career goals. I can actually see the way that my internship is starting to relate to my classwork. I am still focusing on my classwork, but come summer, I plan to start studying for the MCAT so I can move closer towards achieving these goals. Looking to the future, I hope to gain more research experience and have found a job for the summer so I can learn more. I also want to start developing my own research project and make plans to work closely with my PI through UROP next year.
