I worked over summer 2023 to build a custom (free) OER text for the College Algebra Math M014 course. This was built in and is accessed by students in Canvas. I also built a custom (free) Algebra OER for the Algebra for Finite Math, Math M018 course. This course has two components, a supplemental custom Probability and Sets text authored by Linda McKinley and the Algebra content. I updated the supplemental text so that it could be made into a eText and updated the word problems to reflect more current references and to be gender neutral and more inclusive. Both the supplemental eText and the OER Algebra text were implemented in Fall 2023 and are still being used.
As part of the initiative to eliminate non-credit bearing prerequisite courses, I worked to transform Math M014 (College Algebra) into Math X125 (Precalculus Supplement). This involved developing the curriculum, aligning the content with Math M125 (Precalculus) and teaching all 3 (2 fall, 1 spring) inaugural sections of this course during the 2024-2025 academic year. I will continue to work this spring and summer to 'package' this course to be taught by graduate students beginning fall 2025.
Math M124 will replace both MATH-M18 and MATH-J111. This consolidation serves three purposes: It replaces the 0-level MATH-M018 with a 100-level alternative, simplifies the instructional landscape for students, instructors and course coordinators, and ensures that course development effort will benefit all students on this path and not be split between two parallel courses.
I have secured funding for developing online homework for this new course that will be part of the modification and have applied for an active learning grant to develop in-class activities as well.
Updated the course to incorporate intentional scaffolding as well as more active learning and student participation. Student success improved versus prior years. Incorporated this into a poster presentation submission and was selected for the FACET celebration of teaching held in October 2024.
