Goals
Learning Goal #1: Be able to balance a very busy schedule with friends and family.
1. I will write down all my tasks for all my extracurriculars and classes in a notes/planner in a way that will help me be organized with my tasks.
2. I will space out my tasks and accomplish them to not get burn out.
3. I will constantly update my notes/planner so I will not fall behind.
I have worked on this goal all semester and I was able to do much more with my time with my friends and family while keeping my grades high! However, I still struggle with managing my stress due to constantly thinking about my next task. As such, I will add break blocks within the schedule so that I can simply relax for a short amount of time.
Learning Goal #2: I want to improve my communication and build effective and long-term relationships with my mentors.
1. Spend time with my mentors and be very communicative with my responsibilities.
2. Be proactive with my tasks and ask for more responsibility once I finish.
3. Be helpful and appreciative!
I have built a relationship with my mentor and we are now in communication of continuing my internship into the following year to continue working on my research!
Learning Goal #3: Increase my ability to work within clinical settings by improving my healthcare knowledge and using what I have learned from class within my internship.
1. Take every opportunity to interact with patients.
2. Communicate with compassion and empathy. Keep track of each patient’s background.
3. Learn various procedures and take notes!
After reading many research papers and listening to medical boards discuss treatment plans for patients, I have had the opportunity to write my own research IRB proposal for the IU School of Medicine!
Academic and Career Goals: Become a physican who emphasizes mental health and brings about a worldwide Telehealth platform! I have these goals because I am very passionate about mental health and its implications on children. To make sure these goals are something I want to commit to, I will be shadowing physicians, and pursing mental health volunteer opportunities. This interntship has confirmed by career journey and furthered my goals because this internship has exposed me to the harsh realities of healthcare disparities in all ages. By actively communicating with patients, I have been able to work towards my goal in providing a safe platform for everyone to use globally! Though I am more confident than I was before I started this internship, I still have a long ways to go.
After working at this internship, my ability to communicate with various populations has grown tremendously thanks to working and communicating with patients at clinic. This has become evident in my everyday life, as I am better able to communicate and respond to people. However, I would still like to work in administration of a team, as it aligns with my organizational skills, leadership abilities, and passion for facilitating efficient workflows and collaboration among colleagues.
Learning
I am confident in my ability to communicate my thoughts on paper or verbally to my supervisor with professionalism. I am growing this skill by talking to a wide variety of people everyday through my volunteerism. However, a skill that I would like to build on is my independence, as I am often afraid that I am not completing a task correctly, so I frequently check with my supervisor. To grow this skill, I am building my confidence with my own knowledge within the field of my internship.
This internship has significantly helped me gain a deeper understanding of my coursework and major because it connects the use of online databases with informatics, which is my degree! The implementation of these databases on real life patients is very important in my understanding of the medical field.
Though my overal goals have not changed since I started this internship, I have developed a more clearer path in which I can accomplish my goals and achieve my dream career! I have made much progress towards my goals by creating relationships with physicans, learning more about the heathcare field in terms of practice and research, as well as actively observed and interacted with patients. For the rest of my time at IUPUI, I plan on continuing to build relationships and to seek out unique opportuntiies that will help me look at healthcare situtations in a different perspective.
