"This course examines how writing in science and from a scientific viewpoint promotes confidence in students’ knowledge and understanding of science itself. It offers the opportunity to explore and to engage critically in current conversations on significant topics in the sciences. The focus will be on genres of writing that communicate science within science discourse communities and beyond them."
It is important to know what you are getting!
I created this presentation as part of an honors-level writing course in science. In this course, we focused on effective communication and were required to conduct in-depth research on a scientific topic.
As part of this project, I choose to research the effects of a short duration of anesthesia in the pediatric population. The goal was to effectively communicate my findings to a wider audience who would not normally read scientific articles.
I chose this topic because of my interest in medicine and want to learn more about the risks. Through extensive research, I was able to present a small view of current practices and the safety of anesthesia.
Skill Development and Growth
This project enhanced my research and communication skills. I gained a deeper understanding of pediatric anesthesia and was able to translate complex scientific findings into a clear, accessible language for a broader audience, especially parents. I also strengthened my critical thinking by balancing research with simplicity, ensuring my points were communicated effectively.
Impact on Future Work
This experience has shaped the way I approach future projects. I now feel confident in tailoring my research for different audiences, an essential skill for any career, especially in healthcare. It also reinforced the importance of ensuring that important scientific findings are accessible to those who will benefit most. Additionally, this experience has inspired me to continue pursuing research that not only advances knowledge but also makes a tangible difference in people's lives.
