As I approach graduation, I take this moment to reflect on my journey since H200. My "I am" and "I want to become" statements were written at a time when I was still discovering my path and aspirations. Now, having grown academically, professionally, and personally, I can see how far I have come. This reflection showcases my evolution from an ambitious student to a well-rounded leader, researcher, and future medical professional.
Here I am attending a conference in Chicago!
Looking back at my original statements, I see that my core values—determination, leadership, and a passion for helping others—have remained unchanged. However, the way I embody these values has evolved significantly.
In terms of academic and professional growth, I have maintained my dedication to academic excellence while also gaining real-world experience in research, leadership, and mentorship. I have taken on more responsibilities, balancing roles such as in the Student Government, Vice President of my fraternity, and serving as a PLTL leader. These roles have provided me with opportunities to refine my leadership skills, contribute meaningfully to my community, and grow into the person I once aspired to be.
My research and career development have also taken a significant step forward. My passion for learning has deepened through my research on Down syndrome and the effects of anesthesia on pediatric patients. These experiences have refined my scientific writing, and data analysis—preparing me for my future in medical school. Through these projects, I have not only expanded my technical expertise but also developed a greater appreciation for the impact of research in medical advancements.
Beyond academics, I have stepped into leadership roles where I actively empower others, from mentoring students to advocating for change on campus. I am no longer just a student looking for a challenge—I am a leader shaping my community. I have worked to make education more accessible, ensure fair representation in student government, and support those who, like me, strive for excellence despite obstacles.
Personally, I have grown in ways that extend beyond academic and professional achievements. While I once focused solely on pushing myself academically, I now prioritize balance. I have learned to cherish moments with friends and family, to explore new opportunities, and to appreciate my journey rather than just the destination. I have become more open to stepping outside of my comfort zone, embracing new experiences, and finding joy in the little things.
I once wrote that I wanted to be someone young me would be proud of. Today, I can confidently say that I have become that person. While my journey is far from over, I now have the confidence, experience, and resilience to continue pushing forward. This ePortfolio entry is a testament to the growth I have achieved and a reminder that my aspirations will continue to evolve as I step into the next chapter of my life.
Looking back at my Journey map, I can see how my academic and leadership journey has unfolded in ways I had hoped—and in some ways, beyond what I imagined. As I near graduation, this reflection serves as a comparison between my initial goals and the experiences that have shaped me into the student, leader, and future medical professional I am today.
In my original plan, I aimed to gain hands-on research experience, take on leadership roles that impact my community, and prepare myself for medical school through academic excellence and service. Over the years, I have successfully met these goals through extensive research, leadership roles in student government and my fraternity, and meaningful mentorship opportunities.
As I prepare for the next phase, my goals have expanded. I no longer just seek opportunities; I aim to create them. My journey has shown me the power of persistence, adaptability, and community, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I take my next steps toward a career in medicine.
