School counselors are highly educated, professionally certified individuals who improve student success for ALL students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.
School counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for all students. As vital members of the school leadership team, school counselors create a school culture of success for all.
Responsibilities of a school counselor include -
Academic planning and goal setting for individual students
School counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
Short-term counseling for students
Provide referrals for longer-term counseling support
Collaborate with families-teachers-administrators-community for student success
Advocate for students at Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, 504 Plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
Analyze data to identify student issues, needs and challenges
Act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement and opportunities for all students
In addition to these tasks I serve as the 504 Coordinator at our school. I also serve on a team with teachers, specialists and parents to write IEPs and corresponding goals for students. I partner with the students on working to achieve their social-emotional learning goals.
