Approaches to Learning (ATL) are skills that help you ‘learn how to learn’. In each unit that you study you will acquire or develop some of these skills. It is important that you understand and act on the feedback you receive from your teacher in the development of these skills.
ATL skills are grouped into five categories:
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Interacting with others by exchanging thoughts, messages and information
Gathering and communicating information through reading, writing and using language
SOCIAL SKILLS
Collaboration skills: Working effectively with others
SELF-MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Organisation skills: Managing time and tasks effectively
Affective skills: Managing state of mind through mindfulness, perseverance, emotional management, self-motivation and resilience
Reflective skills: Self-assessment through considering the learning of content, the development of skills, the development of learning strategies and ethical, cultural and environmental implications
RESEARCH SKILLS
Information Literacy skills: Finding, interpreting, judging and creating information
Media Literacy skills: Interacting with media to use and create ideas and information
THINKING SKILLS
Critical-Thinking skills: Analysing and evaluating data, issues and ideas
Creative-Thinking skills: Generating novel ideas and considering new perspectives
Transfer: Using and transferring skills and knowledge across different subjects and contexts
