Discover and connect with your inner graffiti artist in this workshop, which will focus on mural painting and spray painting. You will learn how to manage spray paint as well as have the chance to collaborate with your peers on a large-scale project or two. This session will be led by Fatuma Hassan, a local abstract, mural, and graffiti artist.
Barkcloth is a Ugandan tradition and a sacred fabric in the Buganda Kingdom (which includes Kampala). Each participant will receive their own barkcloth canvas to work on as well as the chance to work on a large-scale collaborative project which will combine various shades of barkcloth. This session will be led by Fred Mutebi, who is passionate about the revival and celebration of this unique approach.
This session will focus on learning how to use fibres and looms to create woven patterns and designs. You will learn how this connects to Ugandan culture, as weaving is a prominent part of village life. This session will be led by James Sserwadda, who is a Design teacher at ISU.
This session will focus on how we can upcycle everyday plastics to create strong and resilient bags and accessories that last a lifetime. This session will be led by Reform Africa, whose mission focuses on sustainable use of materials, cleaning up waste, and offering education opportunities for kids in rural Uganda.
This session focuses on using wax and dyes to create patterns, images and decorations. This will require foresight, planning and patience, but the end result is hugely rewarding. Dominic Lukandwa, a well-known batik artist within and outside of Uganda, will lead this workshop.
