What is a mountain appalachain dulcimer?
The mountain appalachain dulcimer is an american instrument dating from the 1800's. It is similar to the German string instrument called a zither. The dulcimer can have 3, 4 or even 5 strings. It is a personal folk instrument and not related to the hammered dulcimer.
Why do we have a dulcimer club?
Easy and Accessible. The dulcimer is a very simple instrument for young beginners to try. It is tuned to 151, it will sound great even if students are only strumming open strings.
The melody string/tablature are based on the modal scale, so all of the notes belong. The dulcimer is a diatonic instrument.
The melody string is based on numbers. The tab is much easier than traditional staff notation.
It is one of only a few American instruments. Others include the banjo, the steel guitar, and Native American instruments like the drum. It is an Appalachain instrument, and is great for learning more about Appalachain culture.
Shapes of Dulcimers
There 5 types of dulcimers: hour glass, tear drop, trapezoid, rectangle, and an oval. They have a range of baritone dulcimer, piccolo dulcimer, concert dulcimer, and a bass dulcimer.
