Layer by Layer: A Responsive Papercutting Workshop (MS, HS/Hands-on)

Discover a unique approach to layered papercutting in this hands-on workshop designed for artists and educators. Participants will learn a responsive papercutting technique in which each layer is created in direct response to the shapes, spaces, and possibilities revealed by the layer above it. Rather than beginning with a fully planned design, artists will build their compositions through a process of observation, experimentation, and creative decision-making.

Through guided demonstrations and supported studio time, participants will learn the fundamental techniques of designing, cutting, and assembling a multi-layered papercut while exploring concepts of positive and negative space, composition, depth, and color relationships. As each layer develops, participants will experience how constraints and unexpected discoveries can become catalysts for creativity.

This is a technique-focused, hands-on workshop. Participants will actively engage in the complete process and leave with their own original layered papercut artwork, along with the skills, confidence, and instructional strategies needed to adapt the process for personal artistic practice or for use with middle and high school students. Whether you are new to papercutting or looking to expand your creative toolkit, this workshop offers an accessible and engaging way to explore innovative approaches to artmaking.
