We Learn from Each Other to Make the Best Virtual School Learning Experience

Brandi Colvin, Social Studies Teacher

Michael Smith has an excellent online teaching strategy, which I learnt through his students. The students appreciate how he stimulates active class conversations by connecting the topics in class with everyday/current events or other things outside of the classroom, in the “real world”. These connections make it enjoyable, and encourage more students to actively participate in the class discussions.

This response is directly from one of my students on my end of unit survey asking for suggestions for improving my practices based on other teachers: "Mr. Smith : Active class conversations on the direct topic or how the topic is involved with everyday events or other related things."

Student Spotlight

Rida, Grade 10 Student

Ms. Colvin nominates Rida, a DHS student in grade 10. Rida has done an excellent job all year long in our virtual meets. She always has her camera on, a smile on her face, and engages in all of our discussions. Even when her mic is muted, she actively participates by nodding her head and showing non-verbal cues as an active participant in class. When in breakout groups, she acts as a leader and encourages others to share their thoughts and participate.

Fun Facts and Stats

Something that we are especially proud of at DHS is the students' and teachers' commitment to providing a wide range of afterschool activities (ASAs) despite the challenges of being in a virtual school setting. In fact, we have actually seen an increase in the number of ASAs we offer at DHS, compared to previous years, and with a higher than ever turnout in these events. The students and teachers have shown considerable flexibility and adaptability in altering their clubs' approaches despite the online learning constraints. I would especially like to recognize Ms. Alichia Gerber for all of her expertise and hard work into making our ASAs as successful as ever.
