In this workshop, we use Chinese teacups as vessels to blend tea culture with handmade scented crafts. From basic techniques to final packaging, the instructor will demonstrate and guide participants in creating a unique tea-scented candle. You will tint the wax, add black tea or jasmine fragrance oil, and pour the mixture into a teacup. Your finished piece can be taken home as a warm, handcrafted gift.

We were delighted by the enthusiastic response from participants to last year’s introduction to China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage and related knowledge. Many expressed a strong desire to learn more about the topic. Therefore, we will be continuing our series of Intangible Cultural Heritage workshops for the ISF community this year. We warmly welcome parents of the ISF community to join us and experience the joy of these traditional crafts firsthand. 

Intangible Cultural Heritage Craft Workshop – Mugwort Hammer

Content Introduction

The mugwort health hammer is a traditional Chinese medicine wellness tool made primarily from mugwort, crafted using modern techniques in conjunction with traditional meridian theory. It has a unique shape and method of use, allowing users to strike various parts of the body to promote muscle relaxation, improve circulation, balance qi and blood, and eliminate dampness and toxins. The workshop will introduce the origin and development of the mugwort hammer, its health benefits, and the methods of production. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own mugwort hammers and learn the wellness technique known as “pounding the eight vacuums.”

Content Introduction

Dian Cui craftsmanship originated in the Han Dynasty and is an important traditional Chinese technique for making gold and silver jewelry. This craft reached its peak during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, when artisans attached the feathers of kingfishers along the patterns of gold and silver jewelry, creating pieces that are both resplendent and vividly colored. These pieces have retained their bright colors even after a long passage of time. Dian Cui craftsmanship not only serves as an auxiliary craft in jewelry making, enhancing and beautifying gold and silver pieces, but it also represents a perfect combination of traditional Chinese metalwork and feather art, showcasing the exceptional skills and artistic creativity of ancient laborers.

Content Introduction

Ronghua (velvet flowers) originated in the Tang Dynasty and is a representation of Chinese prosperity culture, as its pronunciation is similar to “prosperity.” In the Tang Dynasty, it was considered a royal offering. During the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, it spread to the public, primarily worn during festivals such as the Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and at weddings and other joyous occasions. In 2006, Nanjing velvet flowers were listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Jiangsu Province.

The workshop will introduce the development context of velvet flowers and related cultural customs, while also teaching basic production and creative techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to master traditional craftsmanship while enjoying ample creative space to complete their own unique velvet flower.
