Students at NPHS can take up to 3 online courses while remaining an NPHS student. Courses may be taken through New Prague High School and beyond. There are several factors we encourage families to consider when determining if online classes are the best option for their child:
Online learning allows for additional student agency and schedule flexibility, but it comes with added responsibilities such as:
Resolving technical difficulties
Minimizing personal distractions from learning
Demonstrating successful executive functioning skills such as organization, motivation, communication, etc.
Lack of in person interaction and support with classmates or teachers
Increased potential for academic dishonesty
NPHS staff members are not able to provide academic support for online classes taken outside of New Prague Area Schools. Students must work directly with their online provider for support in these cases.
If an NPHS student does not complete an online course by the end of our semester, it is recorded as an F on the student's transcript.
To maintain a safe and orderly school environment, students must commit to either be in the building or out of the building during their online course periods for the entire semester. If students opt to remain in the building, they will be assigned to a study hall where attendance will be taken.
Taking online courses directly impacts course offerings, staffing, and class sizes at NPHS. In short, the more online classes students take, the fewer offerings NPHS can provide.
If students choose to withdraw from an NPHS course to add an online course after the first week of the semester, the dropped NPHS course may be recorded as an F on the transcript.
When enrolling outside of New Prague Area Schools, it is the student and family's responsibility to enroll in an accredited online school. Information regarding online enrollment, including accredited schools, can be found on the Minnesota Department of Education website.
NPHS does not have any involvement in course selection or academic progress in online courses when students register for courses outside of New Prague Area Schools. Students and families must work directly with their chosen online school to monitor academic progress. (Counselors will verify that online class selections meet graduation requirements.)
Contact your child's counselor to determine appropriate course selection and verify graduation requirements are met.
