1343: Foods I

Class Fee: $35.00

Course Description: The objective of this course is to learn the basics of cooking and baking in order to be successful and have fun in the kitchen. Topics include kitchen safety, equipment and terms, measuring and knife skills, grains and casseroles, quick and yeast breads, and bars and cookies. We will also focus on nutritional needs and budgeting when menu planning.

1344: Foods II

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Foods I

Class Fee: $35.00

Course Description: The objective of this class is to advance your knowledge in food units. The units covered will be: fruits, vegetables, salads, meats, vegetarian foods, pies, sauces, herbs and spices, chocolate and cake. This class provides many lab experiences.

Class Fee: $35.00

Credit: This course provides students with the option to earn 3 credits through concurrent enrollment at Minnesota State University, Mankato. This course fulfills one credit of the NPHS Fine Arts Requirement. (It does NOT fulfill the Fine Arts requirement for Class of 2027 and beyond.)

Course Description: Introduces students to basic food science, food preparation and culinary techniques. The course is taught from the lens of different global cultures and the roles of individuals and nations in a global context using food habits as a model. Foods from around the world are prepared by students to develop culinary skills.


1349: Child Development I

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: This class will benefit all students in that it takes a thorough look at the development of the child (prenatal through age 1). Some units covered will be; family, parenting, prenatal, labor and delivery, postnatal, teen pregnancy, birth defects, Baby Think It Over and more.

1350: Child Development II

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Child Development I

Credits: 2 (This course is 2 periods long.) This course fulfills two credits of the NPHS Fine Arts Requirement. (It does NOT fulfill the Fine Arts requirement for class of 2027 and beyond)

Course Description: Observation of children ages 2 through 5 years old and their abilities at various stages will be the main focus of this course. The class will set up a small daycare and discuss careers in child development. Students will put their knowledge into action. They will also be doing observations at in-home daycares and facilities. This course will be offered every other school year. It will NOT be offered in 2024-2025.

1354: Teen Issues

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: This is a course that challenges teens to take an in-depth look at themselves and various topics they could deal with at some point in their lives. It will challenge them to look at their problem solving skills and how they deal with conflict and resolutions. We will be learning about personality, relationships and research teen topics such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, social media and its influences on us, abusive relationships and SO much MORE!

1356: Adulting 101

Grade Level: 11, 12

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: Living “on your own” may soon be a reality. Will you be prepared? This class is appropriate for the college bound student as well as the student entering the workforce after high school. Topics to be covered include: personality, time management, goals and decision making, self care, behavioral finance, taxes, online banking, checking, savings, paying for college, types of credit, investing, insurance and budgeting: cars, rent, food, getting along with roommates and MORE!

1361: Family Housing (Non-Mandatory Course)

Prerequisite: None

Credit: This course is optional Concurrent Enrollment for 3 credit FCS270 Family Housing through Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Course Description: This course will teach the basics of exterior and interior home design. Students will study the history of housing and home design from the past to the present. The elements and principles of design will be covered to guide students to creatively and knowledgeably design rooms. Students will learn how color, texture, line, space and proportion affect our comfort level. They will develop floor plans and presentation boards.

1362: Design Fundamentals: Fashion and Interior Design

Course Description: This course consists of all things design in relation to fashion and housing. We will start by understanding the elements and principles of design, then applying them to aspects of the design industry. Students will explore the exciting and creative world of fashion and interior design by looking at trends, careers, designers, historical influences, fabrics, patterns and basic sewing procedures.
